Find out how Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus found their dream home in the Upper Harz and overcame challenges with a second home.

Dream house in the Harz: couple defies the bureaucratic jungle!
The Harz, known for its dense forests and picturesque villages, is attracting more and more people who want to find their retreat here. An outstanding example of this are Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus from Hildesheim. After years of searching, they discovered a ditch house in the Upper Harz that they would like to use as a second home. But the dream of an idyllic life in the mountains is not without hurdles, as news38.de reports.
The Brockhaus not only found enough space in their moat house for themselves, but also for a small holiday apartment that they want to rent out. But after the purchase, the project was complicated by some unexpected problems. They struggled with an unreliable well that did not provide enough water and a lack of access rights to their property. The previous owners' fence also did not correspond to the actual size of the property and access to the house was via a private path for which they had to pay an annual fee.
Challenges and solutions
Would one think that these challenges would discourage the Brockhaus? Far from it! Despite the difficulties, they never considered giving up. Finding previous owners to purchase additional land proved complicated as the municipality was unable to help due to privacy regulations. Their intensive research and the support of cooperative authorities gave them the support they needed.
Another problem was the unregistered three-chamber sewage treatment plant that discharged wastewater “to nowhere.” Here too, the Brockhausers had to find solutions, possibly by connecting to the elevated tank in Altenau. Added to this was the realization that renting out the holiday home was much more complex than expected, as there were additional requirements for homeowners to consider.
Despite all the hurdles, there are also bright spots. Anke Brockhaus emphasizes that they make sure to spend their time in the Harz not only working, but also enjoying relaxation. The positive feedback from guests confirms that they were right in their decision to move to the Upper Harz.
The Harz is changing
At a time when tourism in the Harz is facing challenges - be it due to the effects of the corona pandemic, the energy crisis, inflationary tendencies or climate change - the example of the Brockhaus is particularly interesting. As tourismusnetzwerk-sachsen-anhalt.de reports, the annual tourism day of the Harz Tourism Association (HTV) offers a platform for tourism experts to discuss current topics and solutions. The importance of collaboration and digital technologies is emphasized in order to sustainably develop tourism.
The aim of the HTV is not only to avoid negative impacts caused by overuse, but also to promote profitable tourism flows. The satisfaction of guests and the awareness of the local population are crucial to keeping the Harz attractive as a travel destination.
For the Brockhausers, the Harz is more than just a place to work and rent. The relaxation, the natural beauty of the region and the feeling of a community help them to overcome their challenges with calm. So your dream of living in the Harz Mountains may come true after all.
