Dream house in the Harz: couple defies problems and finds happiness!

Amidst the picturesque landscapes and dense forests of the Harz Mountains, Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus from Hildesheim have fulfilled their dream. They were looking for a second home and found it in a charming moat house in the Upper Harz. This historic building, which serves as a retreat, not only offers space for them, but also a well-equipped holiday apartment for rent to invite guests to this idyllic region. But the path to your own holiday paradise was anything but easy, as News38 reports in detail.

The trench house has a living space of around 95 square meters, can accommodate up to six people and is equipped with three bedrooms and two bathrooms - one of which has a bathtub. In the living area, a sofa, armchairs and TV invite you to relax. A travel cot can be provided for younger guests upon request. The holiday apartment can be reached via its own entrance and a separate external staircase, which is intended exclusively for holiday guests.

Post-purchase challenges

Despite the charming features of the moat house, modernization posed a comparatively small challenge. However, several difficulties arose after the purchase: an unreliable well, lack of access rights to the property and a fence that did not correspond to the actual size of the property. The Brockhaus should also note that the access route is private and an annual fee is charged. These obstacles made it necessary to seek out the previous owners to acquire additional land, which was not facilitated by community privacy protections.

Another significant obstacle was the sewage treatment plant, which was not registered with the district. The well did not provide enough water, which led the couple to develop the idea of tapping into the Altenau elevated tank - but with uncertainties. Renting out the holiday apartment also turned out to be more complex than initially thought, as many requirements had to be met, such as the provision of fire-fighting water.

Always stay on the ball

Despite the challenges, Anke and Ulrich Brockhaus never thought about selling the Grabenhaus. They found support from cooperative authorities and through intensive research they were finally able to overcome the difficulties. Positive feedback from guests confirmed their intentions and the relaxation in the Upper Harz strengthened their determination.

“You have to be careful that you don’t just spend your time working,” says Anke Brockhaus, who enjoys welcoming her guests to this special place. The Grabenhaus remains a place of relaxation and enjoyment, both for the Brockhaus residents and their visitors. If you want to experience rural life, this charming holiday apartment in the Upper Harz has come to the right place.
