Forest burning in the Harz: narrow-gauge railways converted to diesel locomotives!

The Harz, a popular destination for families during the summer holidays, is once again attracting numerous visitors this year. The Brocken in particular, the region's landmark, is a magnet for nature fans. Whether hiking or traveling on the Harz narrow-gauge railway, the idyllic surroundings in the national park offer pure relaxation before many people go back to school or work. But the joy of nature is currently being overshadowed by a serious threat message.

From August 12, 2025, forest fire danger level four will apply in the Harz. The problem surrounding the steam locomotives that are used for train services between Drei Annen Hohne and the Brocken is particularly current. These are known to produce sparks that, in the worst case scenario, can start forest fires. Therefore, train traffic will now be temporarily switched to diesel locomotives. The Harz narrow-gauge railways are changing five pairs of journeys, although it is currently unclear how long this change will remain in effect, as News38 reports.

Restrictions and security measures

In addition to the change in locomotive, the new travel times may require travelers to take a small detour. The current weather situation in Saxony-Anhalt, with temperatures that could reach up to 36 degrees and a forecast without significant precipitation, further increases the risk of forest fires. An important concern is therefore the awareness of visitors: they are asked to report fires immediately and to protect nature. The official emergency number 112 is available.

In order to minimize the risk of fire, other important rules apply in the national park. Are you visiting the Harz? Then please note that smoking, grilling and open fires are prohibited throughout the area. Garbage should also be taken home with you, and cars should not be parked on dry grass. Photography and landscape lovers should be aware that illegal fireplaces and discarded cigarette butts are the main cause of forest fires in Germany, as Harz National Park highlights.

Changes in steam locomotive operation

The discussion surrounding steam locomotive operation shows that it is no longer seen as up-to-date, but their preservation remains essential for tourism. The cause of the fire was also pointed out in an article on MDR that the formation of sparks was significantly prevented by special devices on the locomotives. Still, the feeling remains that safety should come first. Proposals to restructure rod bearings to reduce environmental impact provide further impetus for the discussion about environmentally friendly alternatives.

Current information on replacement timetables and further developments can be viewed at any time on the Harzer Schmalspurbahnen homepage. The sea view from the Brocken and the enchanting nature should remain for everyone, and only together can we ensure that they are protected.
