Castle imposes a ban on citizens' timber due to the risk of forest fire!

The city of Burg has today banned access to the “bürger Holz” with immediate effect. This measure is due to the current forest fire danger level 5, which was designated by the German Weather Service and the Saxony-Anhalt Ministry of the Environment for the Jerichower Land district. Now it’s time to “Keep your hands off!” from forest areas to ensure the safety of residents and visitors. According to Meetingpoint, even the smallest triggers such as broken glass or hot vehicle parts can be enough to ignite a devastating fire.

Under these conditions, forest fires spread rapidly, especially in dry weather and wind. The city has a legal obligation to act to protect people. The decision to issue a ban on entry should therefore not be seen as harassment, but rather as a precautionary measure for everyone who might be in the area. "It's not enough for me if we just talk about dangers preventatively. We have to act!" explained a person responsible for the city of Burg.

Temporary entry ban

The ban applies until the end of this dangerous situation, but at the latest until September 30, 2024. Barriers on the access roads to Bürger Holz have already been closed to mark the measure. Exemptions are granted, among others, to authorized persons from the emergency response authorities such as the police and fire brigade as well as hunting tenants and forestry authorities. It is important to emphasize that the city must respond not only to the current wildfire threat, but also to previous incidents. There was recently a forest fire in Burg, which fortunately was quickly brought under control.

The decision to block is also based on the findings that there are still some leftover ammunition from the Second World War stored in the “ Bürger Holz “. In the event of a fire, these could become dangerous and cause explosive damage. The City of Burg emphasizes that this thorough caution is not exaggerated, because the risk of forest fires in this dry season can lead to critical situations in which people's safety is at stake.

Climate change and the risk of forest fires

The increasing risk of wood and forest fires can also be explained by global climate changes. According to Statista, rising temperatures and dry periods make it easier for fires to break out. Not only southern countries in Europe or the USA are particularly badly affected, but also Germany itself. In 2023, over 1,200 hectares of forest area in Germany have already been destroyed by fires, a number that should give fire protection gas stations pause for thought.

A mix of careless actions and natural causes are often responsible for fires, although the number of unreported cases is high. What is particularly alarming is that only 27 forest fires caused by natural causes were registered in Germany in 2023. This raises the questions: “How well prepared are we overall for fires?” and “What do we need to do to minimize the dangers of accidents and carelessness?”

The uncontrolled spread of forest fires not only has devastating effects on the environment and habitats, but also causes significant financial damage. Therefore, the call to all hikers, nature lovers and locals remains: Stay away from Bürger Holz until the situation has improved and support the efforts to protect nature and people.
