Ferchland-Grieben ferry service secured until 2031: Pay more now!

The ferry service between Ferchland and Grieben will remain secured until the end of 2031. How Radiosaw reported, the partner districts of Stendal and Jerichower Land, the municipality of Elbe-Parey and the cities of Jerichow, Tangermünde and Tangerhütte have agreed on a significant increase in financial resources. The annual contributions of the districts will be increased from the previous 15,000 euros to 30,000 euros, while the municipalities will in future each contribute 15,000 euros instead of 9,000 euros.

The total annual costs for operating the ferry rise from 84,000 euros to an impressive 150,000 euros. This not only means financial relief for the municipalities involved, but also an opportunity to make ferry operations more economical and stable. The city of Genthin is also examining whether it would like to become part of the ferry network and whether it could cover costs accordingly.

Important setting for the future

The ferry has been in daily operation again since August 2022, after it was once discontinued due to economic difficulties in the Elbe-Parey community. In May 2021, the Jerichower Land local transport company (NJL) took over operation of the connection, which has existed for over 300 years. Historically an important traffic artery, the ferry not only brings commuters, but also numerous cyclists on the popular Elbe cycle path from one side of the river to the other.

The adjustments to the fares in April have already helped to increase the ferry's profitability. Future investments in advertising and marketing are also planned to make the ferry even better known and to attract further sponsors. Advertising boards on the ferry are intended to show that there is an important connection here.

Financing questions on the table

However, the financial challenges cannot be ignored. Loud MDR A cooperation agreement to finance operating costs has already been signed by the districts and municipalities involved. Despite the increasing financial resources, there is still a deficit in the high five-digit range, which has so far been offset by the Jerichower Land district.

At the political level, there are efforts to improve the financial basis of the ferries throughout Saxony-Anhalt. A bill stipulates that the state should cover 100% of the land overhaul costs and 50% of the operating cost deficits. However, political discussions surrounding this issue are still ongoing State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt reported. A final decision could be crucial for the future of ferries.

In order to ensure a fair and functional transport system, it is important that everyone involved pulls together. The Elbe ferry Ferchland-Grieben has established itself as an indispensable connection in the transport network and could soon receive even better support. This would pave the way for an even more sustainable and economically viable future.
