Fuel theft and accidents: Police are investigating in Gommern and Biederitz

Recently, the region has been rocked by several incidents that have both criminal and traffic dimensions. On October 1, 2025, Gommern was confronted with an unpleasant fuel theft. A 55-year-old vehicle owner had left his Renault Laguna properly locked in a parking lot, only to discover the next morning that the tank had been completely emptied. Unknown perpetrators not only destroyed the locking device on the fuel cap, but also stole around 40 liters of fuel and the car radio. The police secured clues and opened an investigation to catch the perpetrators [Saxony-Anhalt](https://www.sachsen-anhalt.de/bs/pressemitigungen/polizei/polizerevier-jerichower-land?tx_tsarssinclude_pi1%5Bact ion%5D=single&tx_tsarssinclude_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=Base&tx_tsarssinclude_pi1%5Buid%5D=603197&cHash=7ea511b6a74ccb3de1d2fc02202720cf) reported.

But it wasn't just Gommern who had to deal with offenses that day. There was an accident in Biederitz at 1:49 p.m. in which a 35-year-old cyclist was seriously injured. The cyclist was riding on the bike path on Berliner Straße when a 60-year-old car driver ignored the right of way when turning. The collision resulted in a fall and the cyclist was taken to hospital for evaluation. Such events underscore the need to take road safety seriously.

Road traffic violations

On the same day, around 7:56 p.m., a 38-year-old e-scooter driver was checked by the police in Burg. It turned out that he was traveling without valid insurance cover - an offense that is punishable in Germany with a fine of at least 40 euros. E-scooters have been allowed in Germany since June 15, 2019, but they must be insured and the drivers must be at least 14 years old. The requirements are clear: A general operating license (ABE) is required, and the vehicles must meet certain safety requirements, such as a maximum speed of 20 km/h, functioning brakes and lighting, as Bussgeldkatalog.org informs.

Another incident gave cause for concern: On the night of October 1st to 2nd, a 31-year-old was caught in Burg on suspicion of driving without a valid license. During a police check it turned out that the vehicle owner had not allowed him to use the BMW. Here too, the police filed a criminal complaint and banned the driver from continuing the journey.

Accident statistics and traffic safety

It is essential to take a look at the traffic safety situation. According to Destatis, the aim is to obtain reliable and comparable data on accident statistics. This data is not only relevant for legislation, but also for traffic education and road construction. Accidents like the ones mentioned above are just the tip of the iceberg, and the statistics paint a clear picture of the challenges our society faces when it comes to road safety.

It is all the more important that all road users are aware of the applicable regulations and adhere to them. This is the only way to minimize the risk of accidents and the associated consequences, both for those who caused the accident and for the victims. A little more mindfulness and mutual consideration could help our streets to be quieter and everyone to get from A to B more safely.
