Mobile laboratory in Burg: test well water and use it safely!
The use of well water is the focus in Burg: On Monday, July 7th, well owners have the opportunity to give water samples from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Gummersbacher Platz. The laboratory mobile, a guest in the city, has set itself the goal of promoting the sustainable use of water and at the same time pointing out possible contamination of groundwater. Volunteers Frank Sombrowski and Heinz-Theo van Wickeren are available to educate citizens about the importance of groundwater use.
At a time when water resources are under more scrutiny than ever, submitting samples is an important step. The contamination in well water can be diverse and range from nitrates to pesticides to pathogens. Intensive agriculture in particular has a significant impact on groundwater quality and thus on the health of consumers. This also shows that VSR water protection, who has been actively campaigning for the protection of groundwater for over 40 years.
Tests for more security
The basic test costs 12 euros and includes the analysis of the nitrate, acid and salt content of the water. After the analysis, the well owners are sent a detailed report by post, which provides valuable information on the use of the water. The usage instructions are particularly interesting: The water can be used, for example, to water vegetables or to fill paddling pools. For sampling, it is recommended to fill mineral water bottles (0.5 liter, plastic) to the brim.
In order to better understand the problem of nitrate pollution, you can refer to the Agriculture reporting which shows that high nitrate levels are found in both ground and surface water in Germany. According to the Federal Environment Ministry's 2024 nitrate report, 25.6% of the measuring points are above the limit of 50 mg/l nitrate. The main reason for this is fertilizer applications in agriculture, which can have a direct impact on drinking water quality.
For a healthy environment
The laboratory mobile not only comes to Burg, but also brings a screen presentation to visualize the groundwater investigations. Interested citizens can find out about the current nitrate map here, which shows the pollution in Saxony-Anhalt in detail. The VSR water protection emphasizes that many citizens contribute to education and the protection of groundwater by providing well water samples.
Intensive agriculture, particularly corn cultivation, creates additional problems. Harvested corn fields without vegetation, especially near biogas plants, lead to increased nitrate leaching. The VSR water protection requirement that the ground should not remain bare after the maize harvest is therefore becoming increasingly important.
Overall, the joint effort of volunteers, scientists and farmers is required to promote sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture and ensure drinking water quality. The next step is to actively participate in the water analysis in Burg in order to better understand your own environment.
