Riot in Möser: youth group devastates front yard – police are looking for witnesses!

On the night of Saturday, July 18, 2025, an incident occurred on Thälmannstrasse in Möser, not far from the secondary school, which caused unrest in the local community. A group, presumably made up of young people, rioted in a front garden, leaving clear traces of destruction behind. Volksstimme reports about overturned flower boxes and garden furniture, which not only gave the affected family a shock, but also property damage in the lower three-digit range.

The increase in such cases of vandalism, which have recently also occurred more frequently in the station area, has prompted Mayor Denny Hitzeroth (SPD) to react. After discussions with witnesses and victims, he files a report in order to be able to initiate targeted police measures for the evening hours. What is surprising is that, according to Hitzeroth, Möser is not considered a crime hotspot, although there have been other incidents, such as throwing bottles at a train or destroying a rest area.

A look at vandalism and its causes

But what is behind such acts? According to the Polizei-Beratung, vandalism is not a clearly defined criminal offense and can manifest itself in a variety of forms. Whether destroyed shop windows or broken exterior mirrors, the range is wide. It is often children and young people in particular who exhibit uncontrolled behavior under peer pressure - a risk that is increased by alcohol.

The Federal Ministry for Family, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth actively promotes crime and violence prevention, especially among young people. Statistics show that the majority of young people suspected of committing crimes have only one run-in with the law, while around 5-10% become repeat offenders. This group, often referred to as “intensive offenders”, is often confronted with social disadvantages and a stressful environment.

Together against juvenile crime

Prevention work in schools is becoming increasingly important in this context. The police are planning to address the issue of violence prevention more intensively in order to raise the sensitivity of young people. Regional officials have already given lectures in elementary schools to point out the risks at an early stage.

Mayor Hitzeroth takes the situation seriously and recommends that citizens be vigilant and report incidents immediately. A security discussion with the police and other decision-makers took place at the end of June. In order to ensure greater security, the installation of camera surveillance at the station is being examined, although the data protection issue must not be neglected.

For anyone who has information about the incident, the Jerichower Land police are keeping an eye out for clues. Witnesses to the incident, which occurred around 12:30 a.m., are asked to come forward. It remains to be seen how the situation in Möser will develop and what measures will be taken to counteract youth crime.
