Saxony-Anhalt launches zero-tolerance offensive against drugs while driving!

In Saxony-Anhalt, the situation regarding alcohol and drugs while driving is becoming increasingly critical. As the Interior Minister Dr. As Tamara Zieschang announced, there were 1,339 traffic accidents last year that were related to alcohol or drugs. These accidents resulted in almost 700 injuries and 15 tragic deaths. In view of these alarming figures, the Saxony-Anhalt state police have decided to intensify their controls and are taking part in the Europe-wide “Alcohol & Drugs” control week for the first time. This initiative was launched by meetingpoint-jl.de.

The aim of these increased controls is clear: the police pursue a strict zero-tolerance policy towards alcohol and drugs on the road. In 2023, for example, 2,720 cases of drunk driving and 2,416 cases of drug driving were registered. Chief Criminal Officer Thomas Kriebitzsch has already announced that at various locations in the district, not only compliance with alcohol and drug regulations will be checked during the controls, but other traffic violations will also be punished.

Education and prevention

An extensive prevention program is also offered in Heyrothsberge. In addition to the control measures, there is information material and a course on which road users can experience how alcohol and drugs affect their ability to drive. The aim here is to sensitize citizens in order to raise awareness of the dangers of consumption.

But the problem is not just limited to the streets. The consumption of alcohol and drugs must also be viewed critically in the world of work. In this context, the DGUV emphasizes that the abuse of addictive substances not only endangers the health of those affected, but can also have an enormous impact on the safety of all road users. The consumption of intoxicants, be it alcohol or drugs, can lead to significant cognitive impairments and reduced ability to react, which is why strict measures are in place, including the possibility of driving license revocation.

The role of the police and European cooperation

The deployment of the police is therefore not just a local matter, but part of a larger European project. “ROADPOL” – the European Roads Policing Network – coordinates the enforcement of traffic regulations and brings together various traffic police forces from EU member states to ensure that roads become safer across countries. This promotes the exchange of information and strategies, which ultimately benefits every road user.

In this context, it is even more important that we all take responsibility for our actions on the road. Whether driving, cycling or walking - impairment caused by alcohol or drugs is not just a personal problem, but affects the safety of everyone. Everyone is called upon to reconsider their own behavior and contribute to safety on our roads.

With ongoing controls and a clear focus on prevention work, the police hope to significantly reduce the number of drug-related accidents. Because one thing is certain: “Alcohol and drugs have no place in traffic,” as Dr. Zieschang aptly put it.
