CITY CYCLING: Jerichower Land cycles a record of 169,000 km!
On October 3, 2025, the celebratory award ceremony for this year's CITY CYCLING challenge took place in the district office in Burg. A total of 725 participants in 85 teams took part in this competition, showing the region that cycling is not only a healthy but also an environmentally friendly form of transport. An impressive 169,039 kilometers were covered in just three weeks, saving around 28,000 kilograms of CO₂. Such successes are no coincidence, as the initiative not only aims to protect the climate, but also promotes the health of the participants through more exercise.
The team from the city of Jerichow was crowned the winner of the challenge with 18,876 kilometers driven. The team from Volksbank Jerichower Land eG came in second with 14,545 kilometers. The team from the Dretzel Fire Department e.V. secured third place with 11,100 kilometers. Particularly noteworthy is the Tschie-Farm team, which won the prize for the most kilometers per capita, as each active participant cycled an average of 1,551.1 kilometers.
Climate protection and mobility in focus
At the award ceremony, District Administrator Burchhardt emphasized the importance of cycling for climate protection and health. CITY CYCLING has been active throughout Germany since 2018 and has also gained a foothold in Saxony-Anhalt since 2020. In 2023, the district administration in Jerichower Land was responsible for the coordination of this initiative for the first time, which is intended to encourage the population to use climate-friendly mobility and to integrate bicycles more into everyday life.
Also exciting is school cycling, a competition that focuses on young cyclists. Schools, students, parents and teachers can actively participate. The aim is to increase awareness of sustainable and healthy mobility among children and young people. The competition takes place parallel to the CITY CYCLING period and is held in several federal states. Cycling kilometers collected as part of school cycling are included in the overall ranking of the cities and municipalities, which creates an additional incentive system for the participating schools. In order to make the potential of cycling visible locally, it is important to inspire the next generation.
Anyone interested has the opportunity to view the complete evaluation of the challenge online to find out more about the successes of the participating teams.
