Tanker accident on A2: 24,000 liters of cooking oil block the route!
A serious accident involving a tanker truck caused significant traffic delays on the A2 between Theeßen and Ziesar in the direction of Berlin on Saturday, June 28, 2025. The truck, which was loaded with 24,000 liters of olive oil, apparently left the road due to a health problem of the 39-year-old driver, hit the central barrier and tipped to the side. Rescue workers were alerted around 6 a.m. and the driver was released from his vehicle with minor injuries. Luckily he wasn't trapped, but the road remained blocked for a long time while the spilled oil contaminated the road.
The route will remain closed until Monday for cleaning and repairs. What remains is a greasy film on two lanes of the A2, which the specialist company could only partially remove, reports MDR. The recovery service worked with four special vehicles to deal with the problem. Despite the efforts, cleaning had to be stopped after almost 24 hours; the work is scheduled to continue on Monday.
Bypass and diversion traffic
Drivers in this section have to avoid the route as the oncoming lane towards Hanover remains free. However, a possible diversion of traffic towards Berlin via this road has not yet been decided and can only be decided by the traffic authority. Road users have to be prepared for longer waiting times and traffic jams, which are already being observed intensively, as is the Märkische Allgemeine reported.
In addition, the amount of oil that flowed out not only poses a danger to vehicle drivers, but also a potential environmental hazard as the oil was able to penetrate into the ground. The fire department and police were deployed with several vehicles to keep the situation under control.
Road safety in focus
Such accidents raise the question of road safety, which should be the top priority for all road users. As Autobahn GmbH explains, good traffic education, modern vehicle technology and a well-thought-out infrastructure are three essential factors for increasing safety on our roads. Proper planning and maintenance of highways and high-quality transport infrastructure are crucial to minimizing the risk of accidents.
Autobahn GmbH continually invests in improving road conditions and has taken measures to increase road safety, such as regular maintenance and checking traffic signs.
The rapid response of the emergency services and the supply services in traffic jams show once again how important quick action and good organization are, especially in emergencies like this. Drivers are well advised to always pay attention to current traffic reports and to prepare for possible changes in traffic conditions.
