The danger of forest fires is increasing: Schönebeck is taking measures for safety!
The heat of summer not only brings pleasant temperatures, but also an increased risk of forest fires. As of today, July 3, 2025, forest fire danger level three out of five applies in the Salzland district. This is the result of a previous warning from the Saxony-Anhalt State Forest Center, which had previously raised the forest fire danger level to four. In some regions of the country the highest level five already applies. Against this background, particular caution is required, especially in undeveloped areas and forest-like vegetation, as stipulated in the general decree that has been in force in Schönebeck (Elbe) since June 16, 2019.
The authorities had already issued measures to prevent fires in 2019, which were specifically intended for the Plötzky-Pretzien local recreation area and other affected areas. The general order regulates, among other things, that if forest fire danger level four or higher is declared, grilling and the use of open fireplaces are prohibited. Enjoying fire outdoors could quickly prove to be risky. Throwing away lit matches or smoking products is also strictly prohibited.
Around the open fire
The dangers of open fire are further reinforced by existing laws. The use of open fires in the forest is prohibited all year round, regardless of the forest fire danger level. Prohibited activities include smoking, barbecuing, using campfires and releasing sky lanterns. These regulations are set out in accordance with the Forest Act for the Free State of Saxony and provide for severe fines for violations.
Since October 1, 2009, charging sky lanterns, also known as sky lanterns, has been punishable by fines of up to 1,000 euros in the Free State of Saxony. It is also forbidden to light open fires within 100 meters of the forest. Although the responsible forestry authorities can issue permits in exceptional cases, it is the responsibility of the respective municipalities to monitor compliance with these regulations.
Forest fire risk and prevention measures
The dry ground vegetation in the forest is another risk that should not be underestimated and has already led to higher forest fire danger levels being declared in the past. Driving on forest paths with motor vehicles is also prohibited all year round in order to keep emergency routes clear. In the event of a fire, the fire department should be informed immediately on number 112.
The regulations for the protection of forests are part of the State Forest Act of Saxony-Anhalt, which aims at sustainable forest management and the preservation of forest areas. The aim is to both protect the environment and protect the interests of forest owners.
Overall, the current situation shows how important it is to use our region's natural resources carefully and responsibly. Especially in times of drought and high temperatures, every individual is called upon to help prevent fires and secure forests.
