Members of the state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt: Diets increase by 500 euros!

The MPs in Saxony-Anhalt can look forward to a big financial gain. From July 1, 2025, the salaries of members of the state parliament will increase significantly. The monthly basic compensation will be increased to an impressive EUR 8,736.66, which corresponds to an increase of 5.6 percent compared to the previous year. This adjustment is part of an automatic system that has been in force since 2016 and has little transparency for the public. Critics, especially the Association of Taxpayers Saxony-Anhalt, express sharp criticism of the approach.

But that's not all: the tax-free flat rate also increases by 2.5 percent to 2,309.90 euros per month. This is financial support that MPs can use for their mandate-related expenses. The total expenditure for active MPs will therefore increase from 20.1 million euros in 2023 to around 23.1 million euros in 2025.

Automatic adjustments and lack of control

The salary adjustments were made without public debate and were announced in state parliament printed matter. A law enables the diets to be automatically linked to the nominal wage index, while the flat rate is based on the consumer price index. This regulation ensures that fiscal responsibility is largely decoupled from elected representatives, which has existed since the Diet Commission was abolished in 2016. The Taxpayers' Association is calling for a fundamental review and the abolition of this automatic diet.

The MPs have the responsibility to carry out their activities at a level that corresponds to their role in the political structure of Germany through the basic financial compensation, colloquially known as the diet. Statistically speaking, the compensation must be high enough so that MPs can lead a life commensurate with their importance, according to the Constitutional Court. The amount of the diets is determined by law and adjusted to the development of gross income in Saxony-Anhalt. From the 7th electoral term onwards, these adjustments will take place annually on July 1st, with the change in the nominal wage index serving as the benchmark the official website of the state parliament reports.

However, critics criticize the lack of transparency and control of these adjustments. At a time when budgetary discipline and political responsibility are required more than ever, this automatic regulation is being put to the test. It remains to be seen how policymakers will respond to the ongoing criticism and whether serious reforms are on the horizon.
