Email affair is making waves: Magdeburg's Christmas markets are in danger!

The controversies surrounding the Christmas markets in Magdeburg are becoming increasingly clear. Current developments surrounding the email affair involving Mayor Simone Borris and Alderman Ronni Krug are causing lively discussions in the city and beyond. MDR reports that Borris was already informed before the controversial email was sent and became involved in a heated discussion about the approval of new Christmas markets.

The role of Arno Frommhagen, a restaurateur from Magdeburg, is particularly explosive. On October 28, 2024, the day before Krug's email was sent, Frommhagen contacted Borris directly and expressed his concerns about a new Christmas market on Domplatz. According to his statements, the project could have “real explosive power” and warned of increasing demurrage fees and the exodus of dealers.

Political complications and internal communication

Borris' answer was clear: she reiterated that she did not support the approval of the new market. Nevertheless, the research revealed that Borris was already involved in the issue on October 28th, which contradicts her later account. On October 29th, she gave the order to compile all the notifications, and a short time later Krug sent his email to review security concepts. These circumstances cast a distorted light on the communication between city officials.

It is also interesting that Krug stated that he had not informed Borris in advance and that there had been no agreement on stricter requirements. The public was also alarmed by the revelation of internal communications that questioned Borris's distancing from Krug's email. Disciplinary proceedings against Krug have been ongoing since January 2025 and the situation remains tense.

Borris’ challenges in city management

The entire situation shows the difficulties that the city administration is dealing with and raises questions about the effectiveness of communication structures. The mayor admitted in a parliamentary investigative committee that Krug was also chairman of the shareholders' meeting of Christmas Market GmbH - a point that is considered problematic. Citizens feel affected by these events because they question the credibility of the city administration.

In the midst of this political turmoil, it is crucial that the city overhaul its event approval processes. In light of Frommhagen's warnings, it may be necessary to find a better balance between market interests and the needs of citizens. A rethink is required in order to regain trust in local decision-makers.

It currently remains to be seen how things will develop. The next steps and decisions regarding the Christmas markets will certainly continue to heat up tempers in Magdeburg and the surrounding area. It remains to be hoped that everyone involved has a good hand in finding a solution that will delight both retailers and visitors and strengthen local tradition.
