Replacement buses instead of trams: track work starts in Magdeburg!

Buses are in high demand in Magdeburg these days, as the Magdeburger Verkehrsbetriebe (MVB) is using replacement buses on several tram lines. The background to this is necessary track construction work, which required tram traffic to be temporarily stopped. The lines towards Rothensee and Barleber See are particularly affected. In addition, there will be major disruptions from July 3rd to July 6th, while track and overhead line installations will take place at a level crossing. MVB spokesman Tim Stein explains that the rails, suspension and track covering must be thoroughly replaced in order to avoid future problems. The level crossing at the exit from Magdeburger Ring to Ebendorfer Chaussee remains closed until further notice, despite the opening of Ebendorfer Chaussee.

From Thursday evening to Sunday evening there will be no tram connection in the direction of Kannenstieg. The diversion for tram line 1 leads from the Klosterwuhne stop to the Neustädter See terminus. The replacement service is organized with buses on line 41, which serve all stops on the side of the road. The transfer takes place at Kastanienstrasse, where passengers can continue to remain mobile.

Construction work is causing extensive diversions

However, the MVB is not alone in this work. From June 25th to June 29th, tram traffic on lines 2, 8 and N2 was interrupted. A new tram route is being built on Warschauer and Schönebecker Strasse. This construction work must be carried out in order to put the new section of track towards the city into operation. The installation of two construction switches is also necessary.

Schönebecker Straße will remain closed until mid-December to accommodate the increasing demands on traffic flow. This requires detours that lead via Leipziger Straße and Erich-Weinert-Straße. There were significant changes for passengers on line 2: The northern route now runs via the old Neustadt - Südring, and the southern route runs in a shortened form between Westerhüsen and Buckau/Wasserwerk. Passengers in Buckau can use the replacement service on line 43.

Traffic restrictions in the city

The large number of construction sites in Magdeburg has an impact on traffic flow: traffic jams and closed streets are the order of the day. Drivers and passengers notice delays, especially during peak hours in the morning and afternoon. Information about ongoing construction sites and the associated waiting times is available on various platforms so that everyone can stay well informed.

With these targeted measures and the change in traffic, the MVB and the city are striving to ensure smooth and safe transport for passengers in the future. It remains to be hoped that the construction work will be completed quickly and the restrictions will soon be a thing of the past.

Further information on current traffic conditions and the construction site status can be found at MVB and Day24.
