FCM promotes sustainable travel: cyclists and carpoolers win!
A very special match day is on the agenda in Cologne on October 3, 2025. 1. FC Magdeburg welcomes SV Elversberg and invites fans to actively participate in the topic of sustainability. The focus is on innovative travel options that are both environmentally friendly and practical. The initiative aims to reduce traffic around the stadium and promote the use of environmentally friendly transport.
In order to support cycling, the FCM is expanding its offering. Two guarded and free bicycle parking spaces are provided, which enable cyclists to travel safely. As a shot in the dark, carpooling is even encouraged to save space and ease traffic. Drivers can use ride-sharing platforms to plan their journey and at the same time reduce the burden on the environment. In addition, e-scooters will be made available at important junctions in the city to counteract overcrowded trains.
Cycling is trendy
The trend for cycling is growing, especially in urban areas, and rightly so. Experts estimate that up to 30% of car journeys in metropolitan areas could be shifted to cycling. This shift could not only improve traffic flow, but also improve air quality and the health of city residents. The Federal Environment Agency highlights that cycling can make an important contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, which are expected to be reduced by 65% in Germany by 2030, with transport responsible for over 22% of emissions in 2023.
Another incentive for traveling by bike: Participants who come to the game by bike or in a carpool have the chance to win prizes in a competition. Discount codes that are offered during the game make the journey even more attractive and provide additional incentive to forego the car.
Health and environment
The benefits of cycling cannot be denied. 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day can significantly reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases and even increase life expectancy. For example, a commuter who cycles 5 km could save around 365 kg of CO2 emissions annually. It also saves space - up to eight bicycles can be parked in one car parking space.
And don't forget: cycling improves your quality of life! Traffic noise, which poses a serious threat to health, can be reduced by promoting cycling. Overall, cycling not only offers environmentally friendly benefits, but is also a healthy and cost-effective alternative compared to driving.
The initiative by 1. FC Magdeburg to set an example for alternative mobility options during the sustainability match day is not only sensible, but also necessary. There is something to be said for: shaping the mobility of the future and taking a step together towards a more environmentally friendly society.
