No new information about the Magdeburg Christmas market attacker!
Today, September 29, 2025, coming to terms with the terrible attack on the Christmas market in Magdeburg, which claimed numerous victims on December 20, 2024, remains a central topic. Taleb A., a former doctor in the correctional system, drove his vehicle through the market, killing six people and sending more than 300 others to the hospital. While the investigation continues, there is currently no new information about the perpetrator's motivation.
How star reported that a special internal audit at Salus, the perpetrator's former employer, did not reveal any significant information. Over a million files were examined, with 12,000 being examined in particular detail. The evaluation of the numerous employee surveys that were carried out to identify possible warning signals also yielded no new insights.
The status of the investigations
Taleb A. has been working in the psychiatric care of criminals in the penal system in Bernburg since 2020. Here he cared for patients on three different wards before he was terminated without notice on December 23, 2024. There is still speculation about the background to his actions on that day, but the special audit of this clinic has not yet been able to establish a causal connection.
The investigative commission conducted a total of 70 internal surveys, in which employees who worked directly with Taleb A. were interviewed. Despite these extensive measures, no clear picture has yet been gained about possible omens or signs of his future actions. The results of the special test should be viewed and evaluated by the 42nd calendar week, i.e. by mid-October 2025.
Mental illnesses and their effects
A look at the general problem in dealing with mentally ill criminals shows that around 55,000 people are imprisoned in correctional facilities (JVAs) in Germany. It is estimated that 50 to 75 percent of these people suffer from at least one mental illness. Psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care in prisons is viewed as inadequate DGPPN informed. A survey in which 137 correctional facilities took part in spring 2024 shows clear deficits: 112 of 130 facilities surveyed rated the care options as problematic. The need for action is also high in the penal system, and the situation has not improved since the last survey two years ago.
These dramatic circumstances cast a dark light on the system of care for mentally ill offenders and underline the need for comprehensive improvement in psychiatric care. Prof. Dr. Jürgen Müller calls for an interdisciplinary commission that should address the pressing questions in the penal system.
This makes it all the more important to view the events surrounding Taleb A. and similar cases with the utmost sensitivity in order to avoid similar tragedies in the future. The pressure on the system is growing, and it remains to be hoped that the evaluations expected soon can reveal new approaches and solutions.
In this context, Taleb A.'s ex-employer also took personnel action and released his superior, which left many eyewitnesses to the terrible attack sad. A clear indication that responsibility is taken seriously here.
Society expects answers and strategies to prevent such tragedies from happening again. Let’s stay tuned and hope for positive developments in the coming weeks.
