Leverkusen gets off to a strong start in the DFB Cup adventure – Union and Magdeburg win!

Sporting events are always a reason to celebrate, and yesterday's DFB Cup was no exception. Bayer Leverkusen, 1. FC Union Berlin and 1. FC Magdeburg, among others, competed in the first round. Most games offered an exciting atmosphere in which the teams fought for a place in the next round.

The focus was particularly on Bayer Leverkusen, where Erik ten Hag celebrated his competitive debut as coach. With pouring rain and a huge thunderstorm, the weather caused some difficulties for the players and spectators. The game even had to be interrupted for almost 40 minutes, but the Leverkusen team stayed cool and ultimately beat SG Sonnenhof Großaspach 4-0. Patrik Schick took the lead with his goal in the 32nd minute, followed by further goals from Arthur (74th minute), Christian Kofane (84th minute) and Alejandro Grimaldo, who tied the score with a penalty in the 87th minute.

Union Berlin shines

In the duel against FC Gütersloh, 1. FC Union Berlin was clearly superior. With a 5-0 win they left no doubt who was the better team. Robert Skov opened the scoring in the 19th minute, followed by Leopold Querfeld (34th minute), Danilho Doekhi (43rd minute) as well as Andrei Ilic (78th minute) and Woo-Yeong Jeong (90th + 4th). Despite a good chance from Luis Frieling in the 55th minute, FC Gütersloh remained scoreless. Union Berlin has moved into the second round for the tenth time in a row and is well positioned, despite poor performances in preparation.

Magdeburg secures entry

1. FC Magdeburg could also celebrate after beating 1. FC Saarbrücken 3-1. Martijn Kaars (43rd minute) and Rayan Ghrieb, who scored in the 45th+2 and 59th minutes, secured the lead for Magdeburg. Saarbrücken only managed to shorten the gap through Tim Civeja (67th minute). Even though Saarbrücken had some good chances in the first half, Magdeburg managed their lead confidently and moved into the next round for the second time since 2018.

Yesterday's games were clear proof that anything is possible in the DFB Cup and that the teams compete even more strongly when it comes to moving into the next round. Leverkusen, Union Berlin and Magdeburg have shown that they are willing to go far in this tournament.

Erik ten Hag still has a lot to do with Leverkusen as many key players such as Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah have left the club. In order not to fall behind at the start of the league against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, some improvements are necessary. The pressure couldn't be greater, especially after taking over from Xabi Alonso.

Whether this performance is enough to inspire the fans in the long term and initiate the desired change will become clear in the coming weeks. But for the moment, success in the DFB Cup comes first and that is a reason to celebrate for every fan. More exciting games are coming up and we can't wait to see what happens next!
