Magdeburg sends a strong signal for peace: flag of hope raised!
In an impressive sign of peace, the city of Magdeburg raised the flag of the international initiative last Tuesday “Mayors for Peace” hoisted in front of the Old Town Hall. At this moving ceremony, which began at 10:30 a.m., Mayor Regina-Dolores Stieler-Hinz gave a speech that not only recalled the horrors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in August 1945, but also included an urgent call for a peaceful world.
The occasion was special because the event served to commemorate the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in which more than 210,000 people lost their lives. Even decades after these catastrophic events, many survivors, the so-called hibakusha, are still dealing with the physical and emotional consequences of radiation. The city of Magdeburg is showing solidarity with the survivors and is trying to spread the message that “no one should suffer like we do.”
Reminder and hope for the future
Before the ceremonial flag raising, the members of the Magdeburg local group of the International Reconciliation Association organized. V. a vigil that took place from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. During this time, people advocated for peace and overcoming violence - a goal that the “Mayors for Peace” passionately pursues. The organization was founded in 1982 and from the beginning had the goal of making the world aware of the need for nuclear disarmament.
The city of Magdeburg is part of this close-knit network of cities that are committed to peace. The mission of the “Mayors for Peace” focuses on raising awareness among citizens about the complete abolition of nuclear weapons and addressing global challenges such as hunger, poverty and environmental destruction. More than 75 years after the devastating bombing, the voice for peace and against war is loud and clear.
A clear sign from Hiroshima
The city of Hiroshima, which was the first city to be attacked with an atomic bomb in 1945, has also committed itself to enlightenment and peace. The Hiroshima Organization for Global Peace (HOPe) actively contributes to keeping the reality of the atomic bombing in mind and promotes the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons. The events in Hiroshima and Nagasaki will always be remembered so that the horrors of war are not forgotten and to encourage future generations to take action.
These initiatives are not only reminders of the past, but also important steps towards a better, more peaceful future. Cities like Magdeburg, Hiroshima and many others have a good hand in coming together in solidarity to effectively advocate for peace.
