Magdeburg's Theater: First Eastern winner as Theater of the Year!

The theater landscape in Germany has a new shining star: the Schauspiel Magdeburg. The magazine Theater today named the theater “Theater of the Year”. This prestigious award is based on a survey of 47 critics, which placed the Magdeburg ensemble in first place in the critics' survey.

What makes the theater in Magdeburg so special? Acting director Bastian Lomsché was overwhelmed by the honor and emphasized how important the equal team leadership and the strong, young ensemble were for the theater's success. In addition, the house does not shy away from experiments and delights the audience with innovative productions. The program for the 2024/25 season not only includes Charly Hübner's directorial debut with “War and Peace”, but also the comedy “Minihorror” based on Barbi Marković's novel.

Historical significance for East Germany

The Magdeburg Theater is now the first East German theater to bear this title, with the exception of the Berlin theaters. This shows that the city's cultural scene is on an impressive upward trend. The theater also recently received the Martin Linzer Theater Prize and was also invited to the Berlin Theatertreffen, which underlines the recognition and high status it now enjoys.

The contract of General Director Julien Chavaz was also extended until 2032, which speaks for a stable and long-term commitment to the theater landscape in Magdeburg. Mayor Simone Borris also praised Chavaz for his excellent work and leadership of the theater.

Impulses for the future

The Magdeburg Theater is therefore in a golden phase and shows that it is on the road to success not only artistically but also structurally. The new season promises exciting and moving performances, all of which further strengthen the connection between theater and audience. This development is seen by many within the industry as groundbreaking, even though the title of “Theater of the Year” has been awarded annually since 2010 Theater today takes place.

Overall, it shows that the Magdeburg Theater not only appeals to the, and especially the younger, generation, but also enriches the cultural discourse through innovative approaches. With its creative direction and clear vision, the theater has proven that it plays a central role in the German theater landscape and successfully meets the expectations of the audience.
