In the world of emergency and disaster medicine, there is an increasingly urgent need for exchange and further training. An important event date is approaching: on September 18, 2025 the German Society for Trauma Surgery (DGU) for the 5th emergency conference in the lecture hall of House 7 at the University Medical Center Magdeburg. From 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. everything revolves around current developments and challenges in emergency medicine.
The event, which is scientifically led by top-class experts such as senior physician Prof. Dr. Axel Franke and Prof. Dr. Gerhard Achatz, is opened by directive impulses from important representatives of the healthcare system, including Dr. Ute Teichert from the Federal Ministry of Health. This conference aims to develop practical solutions for the resilience of the health system and to bring in the experiences from civil-military cooperation (CMC), which plays a crucial role in disaster scenarios.
Important topics in focus
The conference agenda is packed with the central topics of disaster medicine. The focus is on the importance of disaster medicine, a new legislative process in the Federal Ministry of Health and the role of the trauma network in Germany. Logistical issues such as supply capacities for trauma care in extreme situations and the national and international cooperation of the EKTC section are also part of the discussion.
Another aspect that will be discussed in the conference is civil-military cooperation. This was initiated in 1962 by Police Senator Helmut Schmidt when the Bundeswehr was requested to provide support during the storm surge in Hamburg. Today, 421 district and district liaison commands and reserve service personnel work in the ZMZ, supporting the civil structures in the event of a disaster.
Additional events and further training
However, the conference's reflective discussions are not the only highlight. On September 19, 2025, participants have the opportunity to take part in the TNW Speakers Conference and the TNT Congress. In addition, the Section NIS meeting will take place on September 20th and will provide further insight into emergency medicine.
Anyone who would like to engage more intensively with disaster medicine also has the opportunity to take part in the #disasterexperience event on August 30, 2025 at the Retten + Helfen training center in Mosbach, which also serves for exchange and training in the field of disaster control. Here, those interested can gain practical experience and prepare for the challenges in times of crisis.
The coordination of all of these activities impressively shows how important the exchange between experts is in order to be prepared in the event of a disaster. Under the motto “Together against the crisis” it becomes clear that cooperation between the civilian population and the military is of great importance in order to develop effective solutions to the challenges of today and tomorrow. All interested parties are called upon to actively participate and further expand their skills in the ZMZ in order to be prepared for the next challenge.
