Police shoot attackers: Drama in the castle in the middle of the night!
Yesterday evening, September 1st, 2025, there was a dramatic incident in Burg in the Jerichower Land district that brought the police to the scene. As MDR reports, a 33-year-old man was shot and seriously injured by an officer during an attack on two elderly passers-by. The incident occurred in the station underpass at around 5:30 p.m. The exact trigger of the conflict that led to the physical altercation is still unclear.
The 33-year-old apparently hit a 66-year-old man and a 66-year-old woman without warning and slightly injured them. After the incident, he fled towards Marienweg, but the police were able to quickly locate him. But instead of surrendering, the man attacked the emergency services with pepper spray and threatened them with a knife. Faced with this acute threat, a police officer was forced to draw his service weapon and fire it, causing the man to be seriously injured and taken to hospital, where his condition is classified as critical Tag24 reported.
Dispute in the station underpass
The confrontation in the station underpass has shed a shocking light on the challenges associated with police violence and its use. The incident is already raising questions about the proportionality of police work. Investigations were initiated against the 33-year-old for grievous bodily harm and resistance to law enforcement officers. At the same time, the police officer who fired the shot is also being investigated, which further complicates the complex of the incident.
The current debates about the use of force by the police, which are supported by a research project at the Goethe University Frankfurt, KviAPol, are particularly explosive. This project, which is funded by the German Research Foundation, examines police use of force and their legal processing in Germany. The aim is to gain comprehensive scientific knowledge about these critical situations and to promote discussion about the appropriateness and action strategies of police officers.
The results from the KviAPol project, including a comprehensive book entitled “Violence in Office” published in 2023, address numerous aspects of how to evaluate the use of force by officers. The questions about justice and responsibility are still relevant and are particularly relevant due to incidents like the one in Burg. It remains to be seen how the police response and subsequent investigation will proceed in this case.
