SC Magdeburg celebrates third Champions League triumph in Magdeburg!
SC Magdeburg (SCM) completed the 2024/25 Handball Champions League season with flying colors and secured the third title in the club's history. The final took place in Cologne on June 15, 2025, where the team beat Füchse Berlin 32:26 after already leading 16:12 at halftime. With around 20,000 enthusiastic spectators in the hall, the atmosphere was simply fantastic. ZDF today reports that Gisli Kristjansson shone as the SCM's best thrower with eight goals.
This impressive achievement is no coincidence. Managing director Marc-Henrik Schmedt emphasizes the enormously important role of success for the club and for the city of Magdeburg. “Standing still is going backwards,” he said in an interview. The SCM has now firmly established itself at the top of European handball and has qualified for the Champions League for the fourth season in a row. After the triumph, the players from the team were invited to the town hall by Mayor Simone Borris and were celebrated by thousands of fans, which impressively documents the solidarity between the club and the city.
Challenges and successes
For the SCM, the season was not only characterized by sporting successes, but also by emotional challenges. A shooting spree left its mark on the Magdeburg Christmas market. Player Antonio Serradilla happened to be there, which took an emotional toll on the entire team. Despite these setbacks, the team fought through a wave of injuries that often decimated the squad, thereby proving its resilience. Schmedt emphasizes that this adversity has only strengthened the team's character.
Financially, the SCM has been able to grow organically and operate solidly over the last ten years. The halls in the DAIKIN Handball Bundesliga were sold out throughout the entire season, and the Champions League ended with top ratings. What is particularly pleasing is that there is now a long waiting list for season tickets and the club has around 700 partners, all of whom contribute to stability.
The future in focus
A central issue for Schmedt and his team remains the structural development of the club. He emphasizes the need to strengthen the backgrounds behind the team and take advantage of new growth opportunities. The topic of the hall is also addressed: A possible expansion or a new building would require high investments, although the SCM would like to preserve the unique atmosphere in the GETEC Arena. The decisions made by the city of Magdeburg regarding renovation or new construction are therefore very important.
Through all these challenges and triumphs, SC Magdeburg remains an inspiring story in German handball. The successes are not only of a sporting nature, but also reflect a strong sense of community and the tireless work that both the players and the management have put in.
