Christmas market in danger: Magdeburg's mayor sounds the alarm!

There are currently great concerns in Magdeburg about the Christmas market, which could not take place this year. The mayor Dr. Simone Borris has expressed concern about the possible consequences if the market has to be cancelled. She emphasizes that a cancellation would be devastating not only for the city, but also for society as a whole, which has suffered many setbacks in recent years. A permanent failure of the market would send a “fatal signal” beyond the borders of Magdeburg, especially in view of the terrible attack on December 20, 2024.

In a combative tone, Borris appealed to those responsible to join forces to find a solution and thus save the Christmas market in 2025. It has already initiated an exchange with the state of Saxony-Anhalt to clarify the legal framework for holding Christmas markets in the region. The mayor is cautiously optimistic that a legally secure solution can be found.

Wanted: Security solutions for Christmas markets

A central topic is the security precautions against possible terrorism and amok lawsuits, which could be transferred to all organizers of major events in Saxony-Anhalt in the future. This responsibility could further complicate the implementation of markets that have already been planned. The fears are justified, especially in view of current developments and the renewed discussions about security at public events.

“We have to do everything we can to ensure that the traditionally illuminated stands and decorated alleys shape the image of Magdeburg again this year,” continued Borris. Your thoughts are also with the victims and survivors of the attack, the legal process for which only recently began. It is of utmost importance not to let what happened happen, while at the same time looking for future-oriented opportunities.
