Trains between Magdeburg and Berlin: It starts again from November 17th!

Traffic between Magdeburg and Berlin is finally picking up speed again! Deutsche Bahn has announced that a ramp-up phase will begin from November 6, 2023, during which trains will run sporadically on this important route. This is happening as a direct response to the serious signal box fire in Gerwisch, which caused significant damage to the control and safety technology on September 23, 2023. As a result, the signal box was no longer functional and the routes available were also severely restricted, which led to numerous diversions and delays. As deutschebahn.com reports, hourly connections will even be offered between Magdeburg and Berlin from November 17th, which will increase the train volume will increase to about 80 percent of the original pre-fire level.

Since the incident, Deutsche Bahn has worked intensively to create the technical conditions to make the section between Biederitz and Möser easier to use again. Specifically, urgent repair work is currently being carried out in Magdeburg and the surrounding area and will last until November 11, 2023. Unfortunately, there are still restrictions: for example, the RB 40 and the RE 14 are canceled during this time. Travelers must prepare for replacement rail services between Biederitz and Burg.

Outlook for the coming weeks

With the new timetable, which is valid from November 17th to December 13th, 2023, an RE 1 is expected to run between Magdeburg, Berlin and Frankfurt (Oder). However, there will still be challenges because not all of the usual connections can be implemented in Magdeburg. Long-distance traffic also remains affected as it is routed on diversion routes. However, there is reason for hope: further improvements are expected to follow in the first quarter of 2026, including the technical integration of the signal boxes in Biederitz and Möser. DB InfraGO is also planning to build a new electronic signal box in Gerwisch, which could take up to twelve months. As dbinfrago.com reports, a forecast for an increase in capacity is only possible after the signal box has been completely renewed, so no significant improvements can be expected until December 2025.

Deutsche Bahn is grateful to travelers for their patience and apologizes for the inconvenience caused by the numerous diversions and restrictions. Travelers should also regularly inform themselves about the current timetables and consider possible alternative connections.
