Eight million euros for Mansfeld-Südharz: structures of the future!

On September 18, 2025, funding of around eight million euros for three cities in Mansfeld-Südharz was announced in a special handover in Eisleben. These funds are part of a comprehensive plan to support structural change in the region and will be invested in sustainable infrastructure, family-friendliness and climate-friendly energy. Prime Minister Reiner Haseloff (CDU) emphasized the opportunities that these projects create for the district, including securing jobs and improving the quality of life for families and companies. These projects are also intended to increase the attractiveness of Mansfeld-Südharz, as Tagesschau reports.

The most important projects are spread across the cities of Mansfeld, Hettstedt and Eisleben. Mansfeld will receive over five million euros for the “Strengthening Industry – Protecting Families” project. This includes the modernization and expansion of the “Bummi” daycare center into a climate-neutral facility, the replacement building for the “Pfeifermühle” meeting center and the unsealing of ruined areas that will be converted into green spaces. The Mühlenbad in Großörner is also being modernized to improve leisure opportunities in the region. These approaches show that the region is actively working to create a better living space for its residents.

Sustainable energy for Hettstedt

Another focus is in Hettstedt, where around three million euros are being made available for the first construction phase of the “green district heating route”. This new heating network will rely on renewable energies, including geothermal and solar thermal, and is intended as a long-term model project. This could serve as an excellent example for other municipalities that also want to rely on renewable energy. In times of climate change, such a commitment to the environment is of great importance, especially when you consider that Germany is bound to international climate targets, such as the Paris Climate Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to a maximum of 1.5°C. These points are also examined by the D-EITI.

Ice life and future projects

Eisleben, on the other hand, will receive around 259,000 euros from a federal program to finance a staff position to coordinate future projects. These projects will focus, among other things, on tourist offers at the Königpfalz Helfta and the expansion of climate-friendly mobility. These initiatives help to further develop the location and strengthen the regional economy.

Overall, the investments for Mansfeld-Südharz are a ray of hope in times in which the raw material extraction industry is heavily criticized and the pressure to reduce greenhouse gases is increasing. With its Federal Climate Protection Act, Germany is pursuing ambitious goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 and becoming almost completely climate neutral by 2045. The structural change, which is also supported by the Structural Strengthening Act, shows that many regions in Germany are adapting to the new challenges - and Mansfeld-Südharz is taking a pioneering role in this.
