Unemployment in Saxony-Anhalt: slight decline, dark forecasts!

In June 2025, the labor market situation in Saxony-Anhalt caused mixed feelings. Loud Time There were over 87,000 people without a job, 556 fewer than in the previous month. Despite the decline, the unemployment rate remains at 7.9 percent, 0.4 percentage points higher than in June 2024. Marcus Behrens, the head of the regional directorate, made it clear that the subdued economic mood was still noticeable and that fewer people were able to find new employment than usual.

The situation on the labor market has not improved significantly in recent months. Unemployment also increased on a seasonally adjusted basis, indicating some uncertainty. The Harz and Salzlandkreis districts are most affected, where unemployment rose by 12 percent and 10.8 percent respectively compared to May. In the Mansfeld-Südharz district, however, the number of unemployed fell slightly by 0.1 percent.

Regional differences and challenges

The regional differences in unemployment rates are particularly striking. In Mansfeld-Südharz and Halle the rates rise to 10 percent each, while the Börde district has the lowest rate at 5.6 percent. The number of employees subject to social security contributions fell to around 790,600 in April 2023, which is 200 fewer than in March and around 6,700 fewer than in the previous year. This is fueling concerns about the long-term stability of employment in the state.

Behrens said that he does not expect a quick recovery in employment and even expects a further decline in the coming months. While employment in the areas of social work, culture, cleaning and healthcare increased, trade and the security sector showed significant declines. More recent employment data is currently not available.

Long-term unemployed and young people in crisis

The challenges in the labor market affect not only overall employment, but also specific groups. Compared to the previous year, Saxony-Anhalt recorded an increase in the number of long-term unemployed people who were out of work for over a year in July 2024. Around 32,300 people are affected, making up 37.7 percent of the unemployed. Additionally, nearly 9,000 young adults under 25 are unemployed, an increase of 1,200 since the previous month.

The new situation requires regional players to act quickly. Although employers reported 3,400 new jobs, this is an increase of only 200 compared to June 2024. Another cause for concern is the fact that the number of employees subject to social security contributions fell to 795,900 in May 2024, which represents a decrease of 1,500 compared to the previous month. This illustrates how important measures are to strengthen the labor market in Saxony-Anhalt.

Overall, there is a clear message: improving wages and working conditions as well as targeted programs for young people and the long-term unemployed are the key to defusing the current situation and creating prospects for the future. The dynamic development of the labor market in the state remains a hot topic and an issue that affects us all.
