Finally! Construction of the Florida ice cream factory in Schönebeck is about to begin!
The anticipation for the new ice cream factory in Schönebeck remains unbroken, but reality has slowed down the planned start of construction a little. As MDR SACHSEN-ANHALT reports, the construction project by the Berlin company “Florida Eis” was actually supposed to start in autumn 2023. Company spokesman Bernhard Schodrowski announced in an interview that around 100 jobs would be created in the West industrial area. The construction work was scheduled to take around a year and a half, but the schedule has changed several times since the original planning.
The original start of construction was scheduled for mid-2022, but was repeatedly postponed due to internal bottlenecks, difficulties in awarding construction contracts and the technical complexity of the facility. It is now clear that 2024 is no longer realistic as the year construction will begin, as Zeit reports.
Background to the delay
Complex planning processes and serious changes in cooling technology contribute to the delays. The approvals are still a long time coming, and even if a decision is made at short notice, the necessary trades are already planned for the fall. “Ice production was actually supposed to start this year,” said the company spokeswoman. Instead, things drag on and the plans continue to languish.
The new factory, which will be built entirely from wood, also aims to be energy self-sufficient. For the climate balance, solar power, specially built cold rooms and electric cars are used. The company was already recognized by the Federal Environment Ministry in 2015 for its commitment to climate protection - a huge step in the right direction for the future of ice cream production.
The challenges of the industry
The energy intensity of producing and storing ice cream should not be underestimated. According to Bauindustrie, these processes are often a reason why construction site operations stall. The industry is faced with the challenge of working sustainably and efficiently, while finding the right balance between economic success and ecological responsibility.
The uncertain situation raises questions and leaves many curious faces in the region. What will the future hold for the up-and-coming ice cream factory? One thing is certain: expectations remain high while everyone involved waits for construction to actually start. Stay tuned, we'll keep reporting!
