After heat wave: thunderstorm chaos in Saxony-Anhalt-blocked streets!

After one of the hottest weekends of the year, the citizens in Saxony-Anhalt had to cope with violent thunderstorms on Monday afternoon. These not only brought rain, but also a lot of problems with it, such as Tagesschau. The Altmark district and the district of Stendal in particular were affected. Dozens of fire brigade operations were necessary to fix the damage caused by fallen trees and blocked streets.

Two people suffered minor injuries than trees fell on cars. Around 150 missions were counted in the Altmark district of Salzwedel. The scenario was chaosing when the technicians of the energy supplier had to move out to remove fallen trees from electricity pylons. It is still unclear whether there were power failures.

more damage caused by flooding

The situation tightened on Wednesday evening with new storms that ran through parts of Saxony-Anhalt. The districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wittenberg were particularly affected. The fire brigade had to pump out numerous cellars and had a record in Kemberg that up to 84 liters of rain per square meter fell within just three hours. In Bitterfeld, a tree also fell on a car and injured one person. The federal road 100 in Radis became completely impassable due to flooding.

The police in Anhalt-Bitterfeld reported that the B246 had to be blocked because trees blocked the street. On Autobahn 2, there were several car accidents due to aquaplaning, where, fortunately, it remained with sheet metal damage. According to MDR, the most damage could be quickly removed, which enabled further disorders in traffic.

climate change as a background

These extreme weather events are no longer outliers, but rather seem to be the result of global warming. According to a study of the DWD, the frequency increases extreme temperatures and the probability for cool winter and summer decreases. Regions that were not previously affected by such weather phenomena are now increasingly experiencing storms.

The new rain records, which are measured in many parts of Germany, are particularly striking. These extreme weather not only require the infrastructure, but also the emergency services, which have to be dealt with more and more with the consequences of storms. The clean-up work in Saxony-Anhalt is expected to continue until Tuesday, while the effects on train traffic are also kept in mind.

Despite the tense situation, it remains to be hoped that the rain will soon wan and the citizens in peace can report on the summer thunderstorms. But how long will summer stop before the next storm front is rolling up?
