After a heat wave: Thunderstorm chaos in Saxony-Anhalt – roads blocked!
After one of the hottest weekends of the year, citizens in Saxony-Anhalt had to deal with violent thunderstorms on Monday afternoon. These not only brought rain, but also a lot of problems, as Tagesschau reported. The Altmarkkreis and the Stendal district were particularly affected. Dozens of fire crews were needed to repair the damage caused by fallen trees and blocked roads.
Two people suffered minor injuries when trees fell on cars. Around 150 missions were counted in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel. The scenario was one of chaos as the utility's technicians had to move out to remove fallen trees from power poles. It is still unclear whether there were power outages.
More damage from flooding
The situation worsened on Wednesday evening with new storms that hit parts of Saxony-Anhalt. The districts of Anhalt-Bitterfeld and Wittenberg were particularly affected. The fire brigade had to pump out numerous cellars and in Kemberg they recorded that up to 84 liters of rain per square meter fell within just three hours. In Bitterfeld, a tree also fell on a car and injured one person. The federal highway 100 in Radis became completely impassable due to flooding.
The police in Anhalt-Bitterfeld reported that the B246 had to be closed because trees were blocking the road. There were several car accidents on Autobahn 2 due to aquaplaning, where, fortunately, there was no damage to the sheet metal. According to MDR, most of the damage could be repaired quickly, which meant that further traffic disruptions could be avoided.
Climate change as a background
These extreme weather events are no longer outliers, but rather appear to be the result of global warming. According to a DWD study, the frequency of extreme temperatures is increasing and the probability of cool winters and summers is decreasing. Regions that were not previously affected by such weather phenomena are now experiencing more severe weather.
What is particularly striking are the new rainfall records that are being measured in many parts of Germany. These extreme weather events not only challenge the infrastructure, but also the emergency services, who increasingly have to deal with the consequences of storms. The clean-up work in Saxony-Anhalt is expected to last until Tuesday, while the impact on train traffic is also being monitored.
Despite the tense situation, it remains to be hoped that the rain will soon subside and that citizens can report on the summer storms in peace. But how long will summer last before the next storm front rolls in?
