Schumann new CDU party leader: change of power in Saxony-Anhalt!
In an exciting realignment within the CDU parliamentary group in Saxony-Anhalt, Andreas Schumann has taken over the office of parliamentary manager. In a heated vote, the 61-year-old music teacher and orchestra musician prevailed against his competitor Stefan Ruland and received 17 out of 33 valid votes in the election, which took place during a parliamentary group meeting in Stolberg. Schumann will succeed Markus Kurze, who resigned in June due to allegations of sexual harassment. Kurze is said to have harassed an employee of another faction during a summer party while he was heavily intoxicated, as the Borkener Zeitung reports.
A significant step for the political landscape in Saxony-Anhalt: Schumann stated after his election that he would like to continue the good cooperation within the coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP. “Cohesion and teamwork are essential for our success,” says Schumann, who has been a member of the state parliament since 2016 and has been active in the past as a cultural policy spokesman and as a spokesman for circular, recycling and waste management. His new tasks as parliamentary manager will include the organization and coordination of parliamentary work, where he will work closely with parliamentary group leader Guido Heuer.
Experiences and commitment
Schumann, who works as a CDU state parliament member in constituency 13 (Magdeburg), brings a wide range of experience with him. From 2014 to 2019 he was chairman of the Magdeburg City Council and currently sits on the Committee for Economy and Tourism and the Committee for Federal and European Affairs, Media and Culture. His professional career has been shaped by music, which makes him a sought-after expert in cultural policy issues.
With Schumann, the CDU parliamentary group is now led by a comprehensively experienced politician who knows both the local conditions and has the ability to set clear accents in the political landscape. In addition to personal expertise, the parliamentary manager is also supported by Sandra Hietel-Heuer, who remains deputy parliamentary manager. This shows the importance of a complete executive board, which parliamentary group leader Heuer emphasized.
Group work in the state parliament
Parliamentary groups, such as the CDU, are made up of members of a party and pursue common political goals. In the current state parliament of Saxony-Anhalt there are a total of 96 members who are organized into six factions: CDU, AfD, Die Linke, SPD, FDP and ALLIANCE 90/THE GREENS. The strength and presence of these political groups plays a decisive role in the composition of committees and the distribution of speaking time. In addition, parliamentary groups are entitled to financial support, which makes political work considerably easier, as can also be found on the website of the State Parliament of Saxony-Anhalt.
Andreas Schumann is starting his new role with a clear goal in mind: He wants to actively shape the political landscape in Saxony-Anhalt and ensure that interactions within the coalition continue to be successful. A good knack for the challenges of parliamentary work is therefore required.
