Teleemergency doctor system: Over 600 missions in Saxony-Anhalt within one year!

An exciting year is coming to an end: Since October 1, 2024, an innovative teleemergency doctor system has been tested in the districts of Saalekreis, Mansfeld-Südharz and the independent city of Halle (Saale). This system aims to make emergency care more efficient and thus better protect the 558,000 residents of this region. With a deployment of 27 ambulances connected to the central tele-emergency doctor center in Halle, highly qualified emergency physicians are available to the rescue teams on site on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to provide crucial support. The success of the initiative is already evident: an impressive 624 missions were registered in the first twelve months, with the accessibility of the telenotarzt system being a remarkable 98.7 percent, as Hallelife reports.

The tele-emergency doctors who are deployed for the service are not only experienced, but also have special additional training from the State Medical Association. These experts come from various established clinics, including the BG Klinikum Bergmannstrost Halle and the University Hospital Halle (Saale). Since the start of the project, 223 emergency paramedics have also been trained in the use of the teleemergency doctor system, which gives the rescue workers on site a good knack for making quick and well-founded decisions.

Common reasons for use

What are the most common reasons why teleemergency doctors are called? At the forefront is the evaluation of examination findings, followed by support with drug therapy and crucial decisions about the patient's further treatment. A revealing 93.4 percent of emergency paramedics rate the operations as helpful or even very helpful, which underlines the quality of the support offered. The ambitious project will also be scientifically supported in order to evaluate the availability of the telenotarzt system and the results of the operations, according to n-tv.

The positive outcome of the teleemergency doctor system raises hopes that it will be introduced nationwide. In July 2025, the Ministry of the Interior and Sport of Saxony-Anhalt plans to include the system in the emergency services law due to the positive results. It is expected that this will significantly optimize emergency care in Saxony-Anhalt. The teleemergency doctor uses modern telecommunications for voice and visual contact with the rescue equipment and their crews. It assesses therapy-relevant information and can even support the selection of the appropriate rescue equipment for secondary transport, which further increases the efficiency of emergency aid, as Zeit reports.

Overall, the teleemergency doctor project shows promising results and gives hope for a positive development in regional emergency medicine. The coming months will be crucial to find out whether this successful system can gain a foothold throughout Saxony-Anhalt. It remains exciting to see how the emergency services and doctors will develop in practice.
