Commuter parking spaces in Saxony-Anhalt: numbers are increasing drastically!

There is an encouraging trend for commuters and travelers in Saxony-Anhalt: the number of commuter parking spaces is continuously growing. Loud star There are now 142 parking spaces available to users at the 278 regularly served train stations. This is an increase compared to 2022, when there were only 129 parking spaces.

In total, there are around 7,100 park-and-ride spaces on offer across the country, of various types. This includes around 6,200 parking spaces that are marked with a “P+R” sign. In addition to the usual car parking spaces, there are also various special offers: 240 handicapped-accessible parking spaces, 20 parent-child parking spaces or 60 parking spaces for electric vehicles. Around 520 parking spaces can also be used for a limited time, while around 60 spaces are available for motorcycles. There is the option of on-street parking for a further 100 stations.

Multifunctional park-and-ride facilities

Park-and-ride facilities, or P+R for short, are a practical solution to support local public transport. These facilities not only offer covered parking, but also a convenient connection to buses and trains. How Mobile icon As explained, P+R systems are particularly advantageous for travelers who want to switch between their own car and public transport.

In rural areas, where public transport is often less reliable, this can greatly reduce traffic congestion. The goal of these systems is clear: to reduce inner-city traffic and relieve the burden on the environment. However, success depends on various factors - good accessibility, clear signage and safety are essential.

The creation of these parking spaces is part of a comprehensive interface program that has existed since 1996 and aims to link means of transport. So far, funding projects have been implemented at 120 train stations, which together have mobilized around 137 million euros in support services. Around 5.5 million euros are planned for the current financial year and a further 3.5 million euros for 2026 to further advance the efforts.

The concept shows how important well-thought-out traffic planning is. It enables commuters to not only enjoy the advantages of a car, but also of public transport. Through investments and close cooperation between those responsible - from the city planning office to transport companies - the offer can be continuously improved.

Efforts to make local public transport more attractive while minimizing private transport are a step in the right direction. This makes it increasingly easier for people in Saxony-Anhalt to be mobile - and to do so with a good feeling for the environment!
