Police union warns: Renovation backlog in Saxony-Anhalt remains!

In Saxony-Anhalt, the police union is causing a stir by loudly calling for more investment in the state police. How MDR reports, the Ministry of the Interior has acknowledged the existing investment backlog and is promising renovations and new buildings. But the planned projects are criticized by trade unionists as inadequate.

The new construction of the police station in Magdeburg and the modernization of riot police accommodation are just two of the ongoing projects. A planned replacement building for the State Criminal Police Office in Barleben is also in sight. However, this is not enough to meet urgent needs. There is a significant need for renovation, especially in the police stations in Jerichower Land and Burgenlandkreis, as well as the central traffic and motorway services in Halle and Stendal.

Urgent need for action

The current buildings have glaring deficiencies, which have a negative impact on the safety and working conditions of civil servants. Nancy Emmel, co-state chairwoman of the police union (GdP), emphasizes the need for a long-term modernization strategy. According to GdP, this also includes the renewal of outdated sanitary facilities and the removal of mold and moisture damage. In addition, there is an urgent need for continuous replacement of worn-out emergency vehicles.

Between 2021 and 2028, around 607 million euros will be available for new buildings, conversions and extensions. 29 smaller construction projects are currently planned, but due to a lack of budget funds, full implementation cannot be expected. Investments in service, protective and special equipment have amounted to 52.1 million euros since 2022, with 41.5 million euros also flowing into the modernization of the fleet.

Suspicious conditions on duty

The GdP criticizes hundreds of ailing police departments nationwide and is calling for special funds from the federal government in this regard. In Saxony-Anhalt the situation is described as “no longer so dramatic”, but the need for action remains great.
