Missing Ilona O.: Police are asking for information in Geiseltal!
The police in the Saale district, Saxony-Anhalt, are urgently looking for 63-year-old Ilona O., who has been missing for more than a month. The lady, who did not return home from a trip on May 11, was reported missing two days later. Since then, numerous search operations have been launched to investigate the pensioner's disappearance. Yesterday, the MDR program “Kripo live” once again drew attention to this missing person case. The Halle police offered the population the opportunity to provide information in order to find Ilona O. Anyone interested can call 0345/224 1291 and pass on their information. [Volksstimme] reports that the woman is dependent on medication and may therefore be in danger of health.
The search measures include a police helicopter, a fire service drone and three DLRG mantrailer search dogs. Despite these enormous efforts, Ilona O. remains untraceable. However, the police have received some important information. The day after her disappearance, a witness observed a woman who looks similar to Ilona O. on a hiking trail south of Oberklobikau. This observation could be crucial because the woman was carrying a long walking stick, which was later found in a wooded area near the vineyard. However, there is no trace of Ilona O. herself.
Where could Ilona O. be?
The investigators suspect that the missing Ilona O. may be in the area around Geiseltalsee. On May 15, a woman who also bore similarities to Ilona O. was discovered in a hunter's shack nearby. When checking the location, the emergency services only found open beehives from which honey had apparently been taken. However, whether this discovery is related to the 63-year-old's disappearance remains uncertain and remains under investigation. [MDR] points out that Ilona O. may appear confused, which makes the search even more difficult.
The legal framework and the support from the BKA
In Germany, every missing person is classified as such if they are inexplicably absent from their whereabouts and are therefore considered to be in danger to life or limb. The local police station is responsible for the direct search, while the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA) provides support in special cases [BKA].
Missing person cases are recorded in the police information system (INPOL) and if there is evidence of a stay abroad, the BKA can be called in to investigate. According to current statistics, around 9,420 missing person cases were registered in Germany as of January 1, 2025. Around 200 to 300 new searches are added every day, with half of the cases being cleared within the first week.
The police appeal to the public to be vigilant and to report immediately any observations that could be connected to Ilona O.'s disappearance. Every little thing could be important in clearing the case and bringing the 63-year-old back to her family.
