Saxony-Anhalt supports 21 projects for a life worth living in old age

A lot is happening for older citizens in Saxony-Anhalt! A grant of around 360,100 euros will support 21 innovative projects for the age-appropriate redesign of residential areas. The goal? To enable seniors to lead a self-determined life in a familiar environment and to reduce the need for care from the outset. Every project is a new opportunity to enrich the lives of older people in our country. The state government of Saxony-Anhalt would like to make a decisive contribution to improving living conditions in old age.

Social Minister Petra Grimm-Benne emphasizes the importance of good care and an age-appropriate living environment. These measures aim to improve the quality of life and strengthen the social infrastructure. The BEQISA program, launched in 2019, plays a key role in this. It has already supported 92 projects that have been funded since 2021, with a total of 1.17 million euros. The measures range from digital offerings to community centers.

Variety of funded projects

The initiatives supported include numerous creative approaches such as the digital fairytale trail in Parchen or the neighborhood parks in Stendal. In addition, a community center will be built in Lochau and in Weißenfels the “Weißenfelser Engel” are committed to the older generation. Measures such as mobile benches in the Muldestausee and village social work in Tilleda also show how diverse and imaginative the projects are.

The BEQISA program is also calling for applications for the 2026 funding call “Together – for a neighborhood worth living in”. We are looking for projects that not only improve the living environment, but also promote social interaction between all generations. These developments are particularly important in order to create a higher standard of living in rural regions and to strengthen the self-esteem of the older population. Interested actors can submit project applications for up to 20,000 euros. The application deadline is September 19, 2025, and all necessary information can be found on the BEQISA website.

A model for the future

Similar approaches can also be found in other federal states, such as Bavaria, where senior-friendly neighborhood concepts are promoted. These concepts support public services and enable older people to live a self-determined life at home. This uses existing resources and the existing social network. The Free State of Bavaria generously supports such initiatives with up to 80,000 euros over four years.

The focus is on the desire to grow older well and healthily in a familiar living environment. The projects represent forward-looking development that not only benefits older people, but also revitalizes the entire district. This brings old and young together and creates a community from which everyone can benefit.
