New clues: data storage medium discovered in Magdeburg's gunman's apartment!

The investigation into the deadly shooting spree at the Magdeburg Christmas market in December last year is taking a new turn. As the star Reportedly, additional evidence was discovered while clearing out suspect Taleb A.'s apartment. These could make a decisive contribution to clarifying the case.

The 50-year-old man from Saudi Arabia raced his BMW SUV through the festively decorated Christmas market on December 21, 2024, causing six deaths and more than 300 injuries. A nine-year-old boy was among the dead, adding to the tragedy of the incident. Letters were sent to the judiciary asking witnesses to provide photos or videos to clarify what happened.

New evidence discovered

The Naumburg Public Prosecutor's Office confirmed the discovery of data carriers and documents such as a laptop, a memory card and a USB stick. It is unclear why these were not seized during the first search in December and whether they can be assigned to Taleb A. A judicial seizure of the data carriers is requested in order to examine their relevance as evidence as quickly as possible.

The Magdeburg public prosecutor's office had already applied for an arrest warrant for murder and multiple attempted murders against Taleb A., who is currently in custody. This includes the accusation of five counts of murder and multiple counts of grievous bodily harm. The district court granted this application and the accused was transferred to a correctional facility.

A heavy shadow on the run-up to Christmas

The attack on the Magdeburg Christmas market was not the first of its kind in Germany. The security of such events has been a key issue since the terrible incident in Berlin in 2016, in which 13 people lost their lives. Euronews shows that other cities such as Strasbourg and Mannheim have also been affected by similar attacks in the past, underlining the urgent need for security precautions.

The final order is expected to be finalized in the summer, and charges could quickly follow as soon as the contents of the newly discovered data carriers are deemed relevant to the proceedings.

Next Sunday, a place of remembrance will be created in the St. John's Church in Magdeburg, where pastors will be available for those affected and those who mourn. These tragic events not only leave a physical shock, but also an emotional scar in the community, which is particularly serious in these contemplative weeks.
