Renovation of St. Johannis Church: 10,000 euros for important measures!

The Protestant parish church of St. Johannis in Schafstädt has made it: it was founded by the Foundation for the Preservation of Ecclesiastical Monuments ( KiBa Foundation ) voted “Church of the Month” for November. Associated with this award is a funding commitment of 10,000 euros from the foundation to support the urgently needed renovation work on the impressive building, which was built in 1875 from sandstone and whose striking tower was built in 1505.

The church has an eventful history, but currently there are cracks in the masonry that indicate endangered structural conditions. The planned renovation work, which is scheduled for next year, requires a total investment of 235,000 euros. To preserve the church, two essential measures must be implemented: A stainless steel “ring anchor” is installed in the upper area of the apse on the east side, and a roof support structure is also built over the organ on the west side.

The community is committed to preservation

The community of Schafstädt attaches great importance to the cultural and spiritual significance of the church and wants it to remain accessible to everyone. In addition to the regular church services, the community also organizes concerts and musicals that not only appeal to the faithful, but also attract a wide audience of culture enthusiasts to the church. Hartmut Schaks, the chairman of the parish church council, emphasizes how important the place is as a meeting place for the village community and is actively committed to preserving the building.

The KiBa Foundation plays an important role in this, because it is not only an institution of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) and the Protestant regional churches, but has already pledged over 40 million euros for renovation projects since it was founded in 1999. Funding commitments of around 1.33 million euros are even planned for 2023.
