Security chaos in Magdeburg: Police breakdown revealed before fatal attack!
The turbulent events surrounding the serious attack in Magdeburg continue to cast their shadows. Last Friday, August 15th, the responsible committee member Schwan expressed clear criticism of the work of the state police. It became known that an operations manager was not on site on the evening of the attack and instead coordinated the operation from an office building. An approach that Schwan described as completely inadequate, as it was crucially lacking in the situation on site.
Mayor Simone Borris is pushing for clearer guidelines for cooperation between police and municipalities, especially at security-related events. She also clarified that there are currently no regulations regarding technical access protection in the country. “We rely on the police’s findings,” emphasized Borris, pointing out that the city had not identified any specific signs of danger and was not informed about the perpetrator’s place of residence.
Critical findings before the attack
The perpetrator, Taleb A., was known to the security authorities long before the attack. As mdr.de reports, over 100 tips about the perpetrator were received by both the Federal Criminal Police Office and the police authorities. Nevertheless, the attack was not foreseen. An internal document from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA) from December 2023 indicates that Taleb A. was classified as a “prolific writer,” meaning that he frequently came into contact with authorities. However, it remains unclear what consequences this classification had and who made it.
“Before the fatal journey, there was no concrete evidence of any danger,” explained an LKA official. The threat was rated as more general, as Germany continues to be an attractive target for jihadist organizations. Magdeburg's deputy Krug made it clear in his statements on August 8th that there had been no calls for changes to the security concept for the years 2023 and 2024. When the concrete barriers were erected, not even city employees were present, which Krug now wants to change.
The parliamentary committee of inquiry
In January 2025, a parliamentary committee of inquiry was set up by the state parliament to shed light on the events surrounding the attack. This committee, which consists of 13 full members, has met regularly since February 13th and has also dealt with the criminal investigations of the Naumburg Public Prosecutor's Office and a special committee of the city of Magdeburg. At the end of one of its meetings last week, a witness hearing was cut short, putting additional strain on the already complex situation.
The events surrounding the attack in Magdeburg make it clear that there was enormous negligence and misunderstandings in security management. The demands for greater clarity and efficiency are not only an appeal to the police authorities, but also a wake-up call to municipalities to be better prepared for similar situations in the future.
