B188 expansion: cycle path and new parking spaces planned for Rathenow!

A lot is currently happening in the Havelland and Stendal region, especially with regard to the federal highway 188 (B188), which plays a central role as a feeder to the new highway 14. This important transport connection extends from Rathenow to the border with Saxony-Anhalt and is being expanded to promote its newfound importance. Loud maz-online.de Saxony-Anhalt is also planning to expand the route, which should further improve the traffic situation.

The planned cycle path, which will run along the B188 on both sides, will be particularly exciting. Steffen Streu, spokesman for the Brandenburg State Road Agency, confirmed that planning for the cycle path is still ongoing. This is happening at a time when West Havelland and the border area are noticeably gaining momentum, triggered by a new industrial area near Großwudicke. The B188 has so far had an average daily traffic volume of around 12,400 vehicles on weekdays, which attracts both commuters and heavy goods traffic.

Details about the expansion

The B188 stretches for 214 kilometers and improves east-west connectivity in the region by connecting the B3 with the B5. In particular, the feeder function to the A14 and A39 motorways will be strengthened by the planned measures, as the A14 should be fully accessible by 2030. The expansion in the third planning phase covers a length of 1,852 meters and is estimated to cost around 4.2 million euros. Comprehensive measures to resurface and widen the route are also planned. The cycle path begins in Wuster Damm and runs to the state border of Brandenburg.

Traffic volumes will increase in the future, as forecasts for 2030 predict an average daily traffic volume of 5,900 to 6,100 motor vehicles. The developments also include environmental measures, such as the construction of green bridges and amphibious passages, which are intended to benefit biodiversity in the area. The planning side aims for engineering progress in terms of traffic routes and the perfect integration of nature in order to meet the need for sustainable mobility.

Outlook and costs

The total investment for the new route is estimated at around 32.8 million euros, with design planning already in full swing. This form of transport upgrade is not only important for the region, but also benefits national transport. In addition to the main traffic facilities, additional parking spaces are being created, such as the new parking lot at Wust, which was recently opened and creates space for trucks and cars to optimize traffic flow.

Planning began in 2004 and has continued to evolve since then, showing that long-term infrastructure projects require a lot of patience. The commitment to improving cycling infrastructure, as in Mobility Forum explains, represents a step into the future to meet the increasing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives.

We can look forward to the final decision on the planning approval, as construction is scheduled to begin in 2027, provided the necessary federal approval is available in time. It remains to be hoped that the measures will help to both increase road safety and promote environmentally friendly forms of transport.
