Storm damages roofs in Stendal: danger of collapse on Frommhagenstrasse
Stendal seems to be being put to the test by the forces of nature these days. The city fire department and the building yard had to close two points on Frommhagenstrasse on Thursday evening, shortly before 8 p.m. This measure became necessary after the strong winds that swept across the region on June 26th caused severe damage not only to infrastructure but also to buildings. A roof element at Frommhagenstrasse 35 is in danger of falling, and the roof element at number 56 is also in acute danger. People's voice reports on the red brick buildings, which stand out with their decorative elements and turrets. Unfortunately, the strong gusts that hit Stendal and other parts of Germany this week have left these charming buildings dangerously tilted.
But Stendal was severely affected not only by the roofs, but also in other areas. A chestnut tree fell on several parked cars on the Westwall, but fortunately there were no injuries. The area had already endured a stormy weekend as storms Ylenia and Zeynep moved across the region. As the AZ Online reported that the Altmark rescue control center counted up to 600 missions just on Saturday night. Fallen trees were the main reason for the fire department's active intervention.
Firefighting operations and gratitude
From Friday to Saturday, the fire brigade in Stendal and the district was in operation practically non-stop. City fire chief Martin Jurga reported around 98 missions and 59 hours on his feet. “We were on alert and on guard,” said Jurga, who, like Stendal’s mayor Klaus Schmotz, thanked the volunteer fire department for their enormous commitment. The gusts penetrated deeply into the infrastructure of the city and caused damage to roofs and power lines, which had to be repaired as quickly as possible.
Nevertheless, the weather forecast for the coming days is exciting. Meteorologists do not expect things to calm down until Tuesday or later, which is why the weather situation remains the focus. The frequency of storms has not only increased over the last few decades, but is also changing regionally. In addition, there are increasingly strong wind speeds, which result in damage. A look at the wind speeds shows that severe storm damage is expected in Hamburg and other parts of northern Germany. The climate models indicate that such extreme weather conditions will not decrease in the future. ESKP confirms this trend reversal, and citizens are well advised to be prepared for upcoming storm warnings.
