Additional buses for commuters: Wittenberge is taking a new approach from August!
Brandenburg's Transport Minister Detlef Tabbert made an important decision on July 21st together with representatives of Deutsche Bahn and regional authorities: From August 1st, rail replacement services in Wittenberge will be expanded. This measure is a response to the current construction work on the railway line between Berlin and Hamburg, which has been in full swing since August 16, 2024. The city of Wittenberge benefits from additional buses that are intended to make the journey easier for commuters.
With the improved travel times, commuters will receive two additional trips on line T between Wittenberge and Stendal in the morning and afternoon hours. This initiative aims to bridge the time during construction work, which affects over 70 kilometers of tracks and 100 switches. Commuters have to accept complicated detours via Stendal, Salzwedel and Uelzen, which increase the travel time from Berlin to Hamburg by an additional 45 minutes. This makes commuting a test of patience.
Reinforcements in rail replacement services
How will be further reported, the situation at Wittenberge station has worsened as trains to Wismar, Schwerin and Hamburg have been stopped. Instead, hourly replacement buses connect Wittenberge with Karstädt. However, this trip takes significantly longer - a full 40 minutes compared to the usual 8 minutes with the RE8.
Commuters are frustrated by the lack of information from bus drivers and sometimes have to switch to cars to get to work. Wolfgang, an affected commuter, complains about a daily journey time of four and a half hours, whereas previously it only took two hours. His demand: regular investments in the railway lines in order to avoid such problems in the future.
Financing and future prospects
The unprecedented costs for the additional rail replacement offer are likely to be in the six-figure range. These financial burdens are assumed by Deutsche Bahn and the states of Brandenburg and Saxony-Anhalt. The focus is clearly on restoring reliable and fast public transport, as in VDV annual report documented, where developments in this industry are discussed in detail.
The additional travel times and diversions have certainly affected the quality of life of many commuters. But if the construction work is completed by December 14, 2024, the situation could ease again. The specific travel times for the rail replacement service will also be available in the DB Navigator in a few days, which will hopefully bring a little relief to commuters.
