Ticket prices in Magdeburg are rising: This is how much passengers have to pay!
In Magdeburg and several districts in Saxony-Anhalt there are changes to ticket prices for local transport. The Magdeburg regional transport association marego has announced that a price increase will come into force from August 1, 2023. This is on average just under 5 percent and covers all companies in the association, which include the city of Magdeburg and the districts of Börde, Jerichower Land and Salzlandkreis. The reasons are both increased costs for energy and personnel as well as the maintenance of transport services, as MDR reports.
The price changes affect a variety of ticket types: The price for a single trip in Magdeburg increases by 10 cents to 3 euros, while a short journey now costs 2 euros. The 24-hour card is also becoming more expensive and will cost 7.40 euros from August instead of the previous 7.10 euros. There is good news for users of the Deutschlandticket: the price remains unchanged and there are currently around 90,000 users in the marego tariff area.
Further adjustments and outlook
But that's not all, because further adjustments will be made next year, from August 1, 2024. This year, an average increase of 6.9 percent is expected, affecting all ticket types and price levels. According to marego, the price for a single ticket in Magdeburg will rise from 2.70 euros to 2.90 euros.
The changes also affect premium products. For example, the free transportation of people during the week will be reduced from 7 p.m. to 5 p.m. and the transferability of the premium job ticket will be canceled. There are also positive things for students: the student leisure card is valid throughout the network and is intended to make it more attractive for young people to use.
Context on mobility and usage figures
Despite the price increases, public transport remains an attractive alternative to individual use of cars. According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), around 26 million passengers use buses and trains in Germany every day. These figures show how important public transport is for relieving traffic congestion and the environment. In 2023, around 82 billion passenger kilometers were traveled on public transport. The use of public transport makes a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions - 10 million tons are in question, as shown by the current reports from VDV.
By reducing the minimum term for marego subscriptions from 12 to 3 months, it is also hoped that more people will use local public transport, which not only contributes to the financial stability of the offer, but also supports the green idea of the mobility transition. In order to successfully master the challenges of the transport transition, such measures are essential. Variety and flexibility are the be-all and end-all of modern transport offerings, and the upcoming price adjustments are part of a comprehensive plan to optimize mobility in the network area.
