Traffic chaos in Ballenstedt: Simson driver injured, perpetrator escapes!

On October 13, 2025, a traffic accident occurred in Ballenstedt, more precisely at the junction of Bahnhofstrasse and Halberstädter Strasse, which ended lightly for a 15-year-old driver of a Simson moped. The young man wanted to turn right when an unknown vehicle coming from Lange Straße turned left onto Halberstädter Straße and overlooked him. As a result, emergency braking by the Simson driver caused him to lose control of his vehicle and veer off the road, crashing into a fence. Fortunately, the driver only sustained minor injuries, while the moped caused material damage amounting to around 200 euros. The unknown vehicle left the scene of the accident without permission and could possibly be a small car. The police have launched an investigation on suspicion of fleeing a traffic accident and endangering road traffic. If you have any information, please call the Harz police station on 03941/674-293.

But the incidents in traffic are keeping Cologne on tenterhooks. Another example is the speed check that was carried out on State Road 66 in Quedlinburg on October 16, 2025. During the check, which took place from 6:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., officers discovered that 18 drivers had exceeded the maximum permitted speed of 50 km/h. While nine violations were punished with a warning, the remaining nine had to expect fines. The highest speed measured was 87 km/h, which was 34 km/h too fast after tolerance deductions. A driver from Norway will have to expect a fine of 200 euros and one point in Flensburg.

The current traffic situation at a glance

On the evening of October 16, 2025, another serious incident occurred in Wernigerode. A 16-year-old Simson driver wanted to turn from Schlagbaumgasse into Friedrichstrasse when he collided with an Opel car whose driver was driving on Friedrichstrasse. Despite the driver's emergency braking, a collision occurred in which the Simson driver was seriously injured and had to be taken to hospital. The material damage to the Opel is estimated at around 4,000 euros, while the moped was no longer roadworthy and had to be towed away.

According to federal statistics, the authorities are not only concerned with recording accidents, but also with comprehensive data on road safety. In 2024, for example, around 2.5 million road traffic accidents were registered in Germany. Similar to previous years, the number of accidents resulting in personal injuries remains at a stable level that is comparable to the values from the 1950s. The aim of the EU insurance and transport policy is to reduce the number of road deaths to zero by 2050. All road users have access to safety here, from drivers to cyclists to younger drivers in the starting blocks.

What is particularly noticeable is the increase in accidents caused by insufficient distance, improper speeds or even drunk driving. In 2024, 40% of alcohol-related accidents resulted in personal injury. It is important to raise awareness and pay particular attention to road safety. The role of infrastructure and well-developed roads should also not be ignored, as there is room for improvement here too.
