Forest fire near Zerbst: Fire brigade fights against embers and flames!

The fire brigade was occupied by a serious fire at the weekend in the Zerbst district of Jütrichau in the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district. The forest fire, which has been raging since Saturday, was brought under control on Saturday evening, but extinguishing work is continuing to prevent embers and avert potential dangers. The committed work of around 280 emergency services, supported by farms, police, emergency services and the technical relief organization, is trying to keep the fire at bay. The operation lasted several hours until the early hours of the following day, reported MDR.

The affected area extends to around 80 hectares of forest and an additional around 160 hectares of agricultural land. The operation caused particular difficulties for the fire brigade: Due to falling trees and a lack of water, it was not possible to extinguish the fire directly in the forest. However, there is positive news for drivers: the previously closed federal highway 184 is now open again. However, it is advised to drive carefully, as the extinguishing work is still ongoing and wild animals could be frightened, as n-tv adds.

First evacuations and damage

As part of the evacuation measures, some facilities, including a dog boarding facility and a horse farm, were secured. An old silo and a nursing home were also affected by the flames. Nothing is yet known about the exact causes of the fire. However, a separate fire in the Burgenlandkreis region between Großkorbetha and Bäumchen was quickly brought under control. The disaster protection app Nina warned the population in Weißenfels and recommended keeping windows and doors closed.

These events cannot be viewed in isolation. Forest fires are increasing worldwide, not just in Germany's forests. Climate change is accelerating drought and heat waves, which also increases the risk of forest fires in this country, as Statista reports. In 2023, over 1,200 hectares of land in Germany were affected by fires. This is also reflected internationally in the increasing numbers, where almost 37,000 fires were recorded in the Brazilian rainforest alone in the first six months of 2023.

Attention to wildfire risks

German forests are increasingly at risk. In addition to the increase in forest fires, the causes are also important: the most common reasons are arson and negligence, although many causes remain unknown. The recent fire near Zerbst shows how quickly such dangers can arise and the need for careful and responsible management of our forests. The fire brigade in the tent has shown good skills, but the challenges remain significant given the changing climatic conditions.

However, the incidents in Zerbst could also be viewed as a wake-up call to create more awareness of the risks of forest fires. There have been devastating consequences for habitats and the environment in the past, and we are also called upon to take active countermeasures in this country.
