Union of values in Saxony-Anhalt: Drama after board resignation!

On October 8, 2025, the state board of the Union of Values in Saxony-Anhalt announced its resignation. This step took effect immediately and was immediately communicated to the Federal Executive Board. The committee made the decision aware of its political and organizational responsibility to initiate a new beginning and enable a future-oriented realignment. The resignation comes in the context of numerous internal conflicts within the party, which is suffering under the chairmanship of Hans-Georg Maaßen, the former president of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution. Maaßen himself recently announced his withdrawal from the Values Union and emphasized that under the current conditions a policy change in Germany is no longer achievable, as n-tv.de reported.

The internal dispute is not new. Recently there have been heated arguments about Maaßen's leadership style. Jörg Meuthen, Vice Federal Chairman, and Sylvia Pantel, also in management positions, expressed strong criticism of Maaßen. Meuthen accused him of only promoting loyal followers and not sufficiently motivating others. Pantel, who was removed from her position by a board decision by Maaßen, described her removal as undemocratic and arbitrary. Maaßen, on the other hand, rejected the allegations as unfounded and spoke of defamation. These conflicts intensified in view of the weaker election results that the Values Union achieved, most recently in the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia, where it received less than one percent of the vote in each case (stern.de).

Prehistory of the union of values

The Union of Values was founded in 2017 to unite dissatisfied people within the CDU and CSU. Originally intended as an association, the Union of Values transformed into an independent party in 2024 after disagreements with the Union parties arose. Hans-Georg Maaßen took over the party leadership in 2023. With around 1,300 members, the Union of Values is the smallest of the German parties that would like to run in the 2025 federal election. These ambitions follow disappointing results in the past, as the party was unable to move beyond 0.6 percent of the vote in the state elections and was also unable to compete in the 2021 federal election (bpb.de).

The Union of Values sees itself as a representative of conservative positions and has clear political objectives that differ from the previous policies of the CDU and CSU. Their program includes, among other things, a restrictive migration policy, an end to corona vaccination requirements, as well as the promotion of nuclear power and the rejection of bans on internal combustion engines. The party also rejects the expansion of NATO and comprehensive EU integration, with a focus on national interests.

After the latest developments within the party, it could be exciting to see how the Union of Values will position itself in order to be heard a little more in the political landscape. The party's goal of appealing to people dissatisfied with existing policies clearly remains. However, the coming months will show whether this will be a successful path.
