E-scooters in public transport: ADAC test shows high safety despite ban on taking them!

You can almost hear the sound of the emerging discussions in the streets of Cologne: From 2024, the carriage of e-scooters will be banned on many buses and trains in Germany. A regulation that is currently causing excitement among users and providers because the safety of these small vehicles is now being put to the test. Loud chip The ADAC subjected the batteries of various e-scooters to a thorough test.

But what exactly happened in these tests? A total of six different models were put through their paces. It was a colorful selection: from the inexpensive no-name scooter from AliExpress for under 200 euros, to entry-level models from NIU and Xiaomi, to mid-range versions from Segway-Ninebot and Streetbooster and a premium model from VMAX for over 1000 euros. This simulated what e-scooters have to endure in everyday life - cobblestones, rain and cold were just some of the conditions that were imposed on the models.

Pleasing test result

When it comes to safety, the ADAC can report nothing but positive things: There were no drafts or fire changes in the batteries of the tested devices. This gives encouraging reason to hope that taking e-scooters on local public transport can perhaps be reconsidered. The ADAC therefore recommends a fundamental reassessment of the transport ban, as all models have a high level of safety. A safety upgrade is also planned through the new small electric vehicle regulations, which will adapt e-scooters to the safety standards of pedelecs.

Of course, there is also a certain risk aspect. The ADAC points out that the greatest risk of fire occurs during the charging process. For consumers, this means that charging on buses and trains should be avoided. In order to be able to react more quickly in the unlikely event of a fire, the experts recommend using battery protection bags.

Outlook and general developments

The discussion about the e-scooter culture in Germany and its integration into local public transport is more topical than ever. The results of the ADAC test could play an important role in the upcoming discussions. In addition, research into battery fires in electric cars shows new ways to reduce potential dangers and ensure greater safety for e-scooter users.
