Extreme warning: heat wave hits NRW – protect yourself!
Today North Rhine-Westphalia, including Cologne, is expecting summer heat that could really make us sweat. The German Weather Service (DWD) has issued a warning of extreme heat for August 14, 2025. This affects almost the entire federal state, while some regions, such as the Lower Rhine, the Sauerland and the southern Eifel, are exempt from the official warning, but are still warned of intense heat. The city regions of Aachen, Mönchengladbach and the districts of Viersen, Heinsberg and Düren are particularly affected, where the warning level has even been increased. According to [wa.de](https://www.wa.de/nordrhein-westfalen/nrw-wetterdienst-verkuendet-amtliche-warning-kann-gefaehrlich- Werden-93880044.html), temperatures will rise to values between 33 and 37 degrees, which is a major challenge, especially for older people and those in need of care.
On Wednesday, August 13th, the weather stations registered temperatures of almost 36 degrees - a foretaste of what could await us today. Meteorologist Niklas Weise from Wetteronline emphasizes that Wednesday is considered the hottest day of the week, especially in the cities and in the Rhineland and Ruhr area. This means that many of us would be wise to prepare accordingly.
Be careful in the heat
The DWD warns urgently that the extremes of heat can cause health problems. The first local showers and thunderstorms are possible next night, especially west of the Rhine. However, these would not be classified as major thunderstorms. Even after hot days, we don't spend the night in cool temperatures, because the nights on Wednesday and Thursday will bring tropical nights with temperatures over 20 degrees.
Given the heat, it is important to take good care of yourself and, in particular, to protect vulnerable groups of people from overheating. Our advice: Stay well hydrated and avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.
A look at the sky
An additional highlight for nights over the NRW sky: The Perseid shooting star shower will be visible in the coming nights. This could be a welcome distraction and a beautiful sight when it cools down a bit after the heat dies down.
We have to be prepared for a slight cooling off on Friday. Temperatures are likely to drop by one or two degrees - although the risk of heat thunderstorms remains. A weather phenomenon that we have observed more and more frequently, especially in recent years.
We can only hope that the heat doesn't affect us too much and that we can get through the coming times with a bit of common sense and calmness. Until then: stay cool!
