Cable theft and traffic accidents: chaos in the Wittenberg area!
On November 5, 2025, the police in Wittenberg caused a stir with several reports, and not just as part of everyday operations. The theft statistics have written another inglorious chapter, while traffic accidents and fires dominate the headlines.
A very special incident occurred in the substation in Coswig, which is currently being renovated. Unknown perpetrators stole several cable drums containing valuable copper cable. The theft was discovered at 9:56 a.m., but the exact time of the crime remains unclear. The police have started investigating and are hoping for information from the public in order to catch the perpetrators and limit the damage.
Road traffic accidents
When it comes to road safety, police operations in recent days have tragically made it clear that the danger on the roads should not be underestimated. Three accidents between cars and cyclists occurred on November 4, 2025, all in Wittenberg.
In another report, a 33-year-old Nissan driver was involved in a wildlife accident when a deer crossed the road and died at the scene. This incident took place on November 5th at 6:28 a.m. on the L 114 in the direction of Düßnitz and caused material damage to the vehicle.
Fire danger in the area
The nighttime hours brought several fires to the fire department, which may have been caused by arson. At 12:12 a.m. there was a fire in a cardboard trash compactor in Pratau, where several trolleys and a shelter were damaged. The fire department prevented the flames from spreading to the building, but the damage was in the low five-figure range.
Another fire occurred at 12:48 a.m. on the Street of Liberation in Wittenberg, where two used clothing containers burst into flames. Witnesses reported banging noises, which is why arson is suspected. The fire department was able to quickly extinguish the fire and an investigation was initiated based on the abnormalities.
Overall, these incidents show that close attention should be paid to road safety and fire hazards, especially in the dark months. In particular, the number of accidents involving cyclists and Pedelecs has increased in recent years, which is cause for concern. According to a study by Insurers' Accident Research (UDV), every third fatal bicycle accident does not involve other road users, and a significant number of serious injuries are solo accidents, often caused by inadequate infrastructure and weather-related hazards, especially in the winter months.
The incidents remind all road users to be careful and to ensure that every journey is well considered and safe in order to avoid accidents and promote safe coexistence.
For current information and events, it remains essential to look at local reporting. We will continue to report on developments in the region. Stay safe!
