New chief physician for orthopedics in Altenburg: Prof. Aurich in focus!
Since July 1, 2025, the Clinic for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery at the Altenburger Land Clinic has been under the direction of Prof. Dr. Matthias Aurich. The experienced doctor has an impressive career that has grown not only in Germany but also internationally. He began his medical studies at the University of Jena and left his mark in renowned institutions such as Trinity College in Dublin and Yokohama City University in Japan. He started his career at the Thuringia Clinic in Saalfeld in 1996 and continued his training in Stuttgart and at Rush University in Chicago, where he focused intensively on cartilage and osteoarthritis research.
Prof. Aurich is not only a specialist in orthopedics, but also in orthopedics and trauma surgery. After a stay abroad in Melbourne and London, he worked as senior physician in the Department of Accident and Reconstructive Surgery at Jena University Hospital until 2020. There he acquired his habilitation at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg in 2021 and was appointed adjunct professor in June 2022. His focus is on accident and seriously injured care, trauma management and the treatment of cartilage damage and osteoarthritis.
Motivation and goals
“A good knack for making the right decision,” is how Prof. Aurich describes his move to Altenburg, where the combination of orthopedics and trauma surgery offers the optimal treatment approach for patients. Acute injuries can be treated here as well as chronic pain, which he considers to be particularly beneficial. The clinic is considered an interesting training facility for further training assistants, especially for prospective specialists.
Another important aspect for the new chief physician is the well-being of his employees. Prof. Aurich wants to create a good environment in which doctors and nursing staff can work motivated. This ensures that not only patients but also employees receive the best possible care.
Training and knowledge exchange
Further training plays a central role in orthopedics. Platforms like that F.A.M.E.® have been offering a comprehensive range of medical training in orthopedics and sports medicine for over 20 years. From hands-on surgical training to live streams, the events are very popular with medical professionals. Young doctors in particular benefit from initiatives such as NEXGEN, which help them deepen their knowledge.
The AOUC – Academy of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery is also one of the organizers that promote exchange among experts. A large number of organizations such as the German Society for Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery and the German Society for Endoprosthetics are committed to the exchange of knowledge and innovative forms of therapy. Numerous seminars and congresses that take place regularly to take into account the latest developments in medicine are also an integral part.
In this dynamic environment, at the top with personalities like Prof. Dr. Aurich, the field of orthopedics and trauma surgery is experiencing an exciting time in which not only patients receive optimal care, but also the specialists can constantly learn and develop.
