New water playground in Wittenberg: A paradise for young and old!
Something is happening in Wittenberg's Pfaffengasse! The popular water playground has been closed since August 25, 2025 due to extensive renovation work. The square will probably remain closed until the end of the year while the city invests 372,000 euros in the future of the playground. This redesign aims to emphasize the proximity to the Elbe and the nearby zoo and Elbe Aquarium, as the city of Wittenberg announced on its website MZ reported.
The water playground, which was built in 1954 and last renovated in 2010, is the only one of its kind in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. It has always been very popular, especially due to its central location next to the zoo. The new elements are completely tailored to the experience of the Elbe and the local flora and fauna. “The goal is to make the course of the Elbe from its origins to the North Sea tangible for children and families,” emphasizes the city.
New look and innovative functions
The planned innovations are impressive: a large wooden toy fish motif forms the center of the new water playground. In addition, smaller wobbly fish and a toy fish with a slide are integrated. For the little adventurers, a wooden walkway will be created on the southern edge as well as reed balancing elements that represent a symbolic connection to the riverside vegetation.
Another highlight is the playhouse in the shape of a fishing hut, which is located in the northwestern area of the site. In addition, the existing “bird” play equipment will remain part of the new concept, and a barrier-free sand play table will be available for creative activities.
A contribution to the urban climate
Not only fun and games are on the agenda, but also taking climatic aspects into account. Public water features are not only a place for young water lovers, but they also help cool down urban spaces, especially on hot summer days. These water features are of great importance to the community as they promote social interaction and offer children a new experience. In addition, they are very trendy of the times by helping to improve the city climate - the website provides information about this Playground landscape.
The redesign should not only increase the play value, but also create awareness of water as a quality of life in the city. The theme of water games shows how important access to water is for people who don't have their own pools and gives the opportunity to experience this element in a playful way.
The construction work is being carried out by the company Landschafts- und Gartenbau Stackelitz. The water playground is scheduled to reopen in autumn 2026. A definitely exciting project for the little water players and their families!
